by DanielF For a strange reason, tourists tend not to be very imaginative and always follow obediently the dictates of travel guides. For this reason, the tide of visitors can turn a charming place into a nightmare, whereas similarly valuable sites remain in the most opprobious ostracism. This is also the case of Alsace: unknown places are just a few kilometers away from overcrowded towns like Riquewihr or Kayserberg. These places, rich in art and history, should not be skipped in an Alsatian tour by any means; but he who wants to visit a typical Alsatian place without the crowds, then Bergheim could be a perfect choice amongst many others. Bergheim has indeed everything you expect for the perfect Alsatian experience: half-timbered coulourful houses, picturesque flower pots and town fountains, vineyards and a rest of the town fortifications, including an impressive watch tower. And yes, very few tourists. Leave a Comment

one little fountain by elgin99 Sélestat, that means culture (library), exciting historical architecture, best wine and everywhere you look Gourmet restaurants. Never I have eaten again so well (and so much) like in this town. One must not search, even in the smallest restaurant one is spoiled with good food and service. Another memory are the storks, on the roofs of many houses. Leave a Comment

by DanielF As we were explained, the name Hunawihr refers to the first lords of the town, back in the early Middle Ages. Not surprisingly, the feudal lord was called Huno and his wife was called Huna!!. The latter was declared a Saint and, in the subsequent centuries, its relics attracted a significant number of pilgrims to Hunawihr. Hunawihr makes part of the 149 villages which have been labeled as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France ("The most beautiful villages of France"), an independent association, which aims to promote and enhance the beauty and picturesquism of small historical towns in France. The importance of the monuments of Hunawihr more than justifies the granting of this label of quality. The main attractions include a XVI Century Town Hall, a Renaissance fountain dedicated to Saint Huna, and the XVI century Church of Saint James, with an adjacent fortified cemetery. But the real charm of Hunawihr lies in the numerous traditional homes of the wine growers, several of them dating back to the Renaissance period, and in the vineyards that totally surround the village as far as the sight reaches. Hunawihr is also the home to the Centre for the Reintroduction of Storks and Otters. These two animals have become icons of the region and Alsatians are putting a lot of effort to let them thrive as they did in the old days. The visit of the park provides light on the breeding programs for these two species but is also fun especially for families. Near it, you can also visit the garden of exotic butterflies. statue St. Odile by elgin99 The Mont Saint Odile is one of the best-known destinations and same time the mostly visited place of pilgrimage in Alsace. The mountain Odilien is called the holy mountain of Alsace. The main center of attraction is the monastery of the Holy Prioress Odilia (Mother of Alsace), establishes on a precipitously sloping rock. The holy Odilia is the protection patroness of Alsace. She has founded the monastery in the year 700 . Her grave is in the chapel. Beside the monastery buildings there is a larger-than-life sandstone statue of the Holy Odilia. The zenith of the monastery was in the 12th century. After several lootings and fires monastery was rebuilt at the end of 17th century. A commemorative table in the court reminds for the visit of Pope Johannes Paul II some years ago. Another special is the fact of "Ewige Anbetung" (Everlasting Adoration. or Everlasting Prayer). Since July, 1931 layman's groups from all deanships of Alsace pray continuously on the mountain St. Odile, day and night. Set 761m (2496ft) high up in the mountains, Mont Sainte-Odile is a very original convent with own hotel, restaurants, snack bars, souvenir shops, spring and a wonderful view over the Plain of Alsace, goes all the way to the ridge of the Black Forest on the other side of the Rhine River, in Germany. It is also the starting point for many magnificant hikes among stones, springs, trees and effects of light found in the Vosges Mountains. Would you like to hear the bells of Saint Odile? Click there. My tip. Take a taxi to the mountain. Attend divine service, walk along the Pagan Wall. The wandering (ca. 15 km) goes back along the holy spring to village Barr, straight on through the wonderful nature world of the Vosges Mountains and through the vineyards. On the way there is a so-called forester's house with fantastic French cuisine. This tour belonged to my nicest excursions in Alsace! Legend of Saint-Odile you find in my General Tip! Leave a Comment

A family of symbols by rexvaughan The stork is a symbol of Alsace; you can see lots of pictures of them nesting on chimneys - this is almost an Alsatian logo. However, a few decades ago the population had shrunk to 5 pairs! To correct this problem this repopulation center was opened and now there are well in excess of 200 pairs. The parc also is helping reestablish the otter and has a variety of other wildlife including cormorants and penguins. Penguins in France!!! I would not have believed it if I had not seen it. Leave a Comment Directions: Follow the stork signs. As I mentioned elsewhere, Hunawihr is so small you can find everything with no problem. I don't know if they even use street addresses.

Church tower by rexvaughan This picturesque little church sits on a hill at the edge of town and overlooks Hunawihr. It is a 16th Century structure with some parts going back earlier and includes a wall around the cemetery beside the church. Due to the back and forth French and German history of Alsace, it has been alternately Catholic and Protestant and is now shared by both. I understand that the Catholics are buried inside the wall and the Protestants outside, so there is still some separation. The clock in the tower is still working. Do you supposed it has been in working order for 500 years?! Leave a Comment Directions: As you go into Hunawihr you can't miss it. It dominates the skyline.

For the birds by rexvaughan This center does a great job of restoring the stork population and most are in the wild but return to some of the perches and nests provided on the grounds. You can see storks of all ages and there is also an aquarium and pool with sunken viewing level that enables you to watch the cormorants, otters, fish and penguins under water. It would be an ideal place for children. I must say these two old "children" had a great time here. Leave a Comment Directions: Follow the stork signs.
