It's impossible to discuss Alsace wines and not mention Zind-Humbrecht. It's generally considered as the Rolls Royce among the Alsatian domaines. Zind-Humbrecht is located outside town, right between the vineyards, in a classy modern building. Their extensive range of wines varies from extremely good to absolutely stunning. Olivier Humbrecht is currently in charge of the centuries old family company together with his charming wife Margaret. She will possibly lead you through the tasting but Olivier might show up as well when he's not occupied with the harvest or with his hobby: scotch malt whiskies.
(Visit and tasting by appointment only.)

    Domaine Josmeyer
  • Tip Rating:
  • Josmeyer is one of the top wineries in the Alsace. They own some of the best Brand and Hengst grand cru vineyards and make delicious riesling and pinot gris.
They welcome visitors, but in the harvest period (September/October) it is wise to make an appointment well in advance so Celine is ready to show you around and let you taste their delicacies.

    Hiking
It is often difficult for outsiders to find hiking/walking trails. Not the case in Alsace. Hiking through the vineyards of Alsace is not only easy, it is practically encouraged. The hiking trails were marked better than the roads. One can walk from town to town through the vineyards, easily reaching several towns within a couple of hours. The trail signs were clearly marked. Dress accordingly though as the trails can be muddy. It is also a great way to see some more out of the way wineries that are off the beaten path.

    Ribeauville
"Alsace is a party..." wrote Emile Baas. And it is when you visit Ribeauville that you understand the full meaning of this sentence. Here the ancient walls, the streets, the old houses and their wood beams are always decorated just waiting for the first note of music.

Ribeauvillé has a long History. It is first mentionned under "Ratbaldovillare" in an official document circa 768 AD. It meant "Villa of Ratbold", in old german "Ratbold" signified "the boldest man of the counsel".

Property of the Dukes of Alsace, the Counts of Eguisheim, the Emperor of Germany and the Bishop of Basel, it was the Counts of Ribeaupierre who were the last lords of the town before the french revolution.

Masters of great and little things, the Lords of Ribeaupierre were also the protectors of the travelling musicians and actors who filled the town every 8th of septembre, birthday of the virgin Mary.

This tradition is still alive nowadays, visitors from around the world gather in Ribeauville to see traveling musicians put up a tribute show for their ancient sponsors.

Mont Sainte-Odile, Mountain of Holy Odilia
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Mont Saint Odile is one of the best-known destinations and same time the mostly visited place of pilgrimage in Alsace. The mountain Odilien is called the holy mountain of Alsace. The main center of attraction is the monastery of the Holy Prioress Odilia (Mother of Alsace), establishes on a precipitously sloping rock.

The holy Odilia is the protection patroness of Alsace. She has founded the monastery in the year 700 . Her grave is in the chapel.

Beside the monastery buildings there is a larger-than-life sandstone statue of the Holy Odilia. The zenith of the monastery was in the 12th century. After several lootings and fires monastery was rebuilt at the end of 17th century. A commemorative table in the court reminds for the visit of Pope Johannes Paul II some years ago.

Another special is the fact of "Ewige Anbetung" (Everlasting Adoration. or Everlasting Prayer). Since July, 1931 layman's groups from all deanships of Alsace pray continuously on the mountain St. Odile, day and night.

Set 761m (2496ft) high up in the mountains, Mont Sainte-Odile is a very original convent with own hotel, restaurants, snack bars, souvenir shops, spring and a wonderful view over the Plain of Alsace, goes all the way to the ridge of the Black Forest on the other side of the Rhine River, in Germany. It is also the starting point for many magnificant hikes among stones, springs, trees and effects of light found in the Vosges Mountains.

Would you like to hear the bells of Saint Odile? Click there.

My tip. Take a taxi to the mountain. Attend divine service, walk along the Pagan Wall.
The wandering (ca. 15 km) goes back along the holy spring to village Barr, straight on through the wonderful nature world of the Vosges Mountains and through the vineyards.
On the way there is a so-called forester's house with fantastic French cuisine.
This tour belonged to my nicest excursions in Alsace!

Legend of Saint-Odile you find in my General Tip!

    Strasbourg - The Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • Famous Cathedral would need pages to describe it. In seven epochs built, begun in the 12th century, completed 1439. One of the most significant and most wonderful buildings of western art. Crossing and apse, the crypt, glass paintings and the famous astronomical clock are mentioned only exemplarily.

The astronomical clock - a whole piece of art by science, art and technology. She is 18 ms high. She shows the expiry of the hours and days and gives also astronomical informations. Figures move at 12.30 o´clock.

    High Kingsburg
  • Tip Rating:
  • standing on top of a 700 meter high hill, guarding the Rhine Valley, the forteress of Haut-Koenisbourg is one of the most impressive castles in France.

It was let built by the Hohenstaufen family in the XII century, but what we see today is an idealised reconstruction carried out in the XIX century inspired by the Romantic spirit of that time. Nevertheless, the magnificency of the building, the splendid panorama and the bucollic setting are well worth the visit.

    Route des Cretes
  • Tip Rating:
  • Other of the most popular tourist circuits in Alsace is the so called Route des Cretes, which runs along roughly 80 km between forests and pastures in the las ranges of the Vosges mountains as they reach for the Rhine Valley.

A good starting point for the circuit is the Col du Bonhomme, following to some of the most famous Alsacean peaks, like the Honneck or the Grand Ballon. In Winter, however, part of the route can be closed to the traffic because of the snow.

Tamed nature here, but as scenic as it can get.
