Visit Ammerschwihr

by DanielF

Like many other towns in Alsace, Ammerschwihr was almost burnt to ashes during the last great war, but it has been reconstructed keeping in mind the old style of the Alsatian towns. In this way, modernity and comfort have been made compatible with the enchantment of older times. The main reason why Ammerschwihr is known is the Kaefferkopf wines, produced with the grapes grown in the so-called hill, which are considered to have an exceptional quality.

Join the Watchman in Turckheim

by DanielF

Three old gates in one of the best preserved medieval city walls in Alsace still give way to the Turckheimer old town. Putting it into the travel guide language, one could say that trespassing one of these thresholds is like a journey back in time. And certainly few things have changed here since the year when a famous battle was fought here between Germans and French. Who else could it be?Turckheim is the only town in France where a night watchman is still on duty, although his tasks are nowadays more related to folklore and tourism than to its traditional functions. As a tourist, you can join in his daily night round across the town from May to October. The quality of the Turckheim wines is explained by an old legend: a fantastic dragon-like sea creature arrived one day to town and climbed to the top of the nearby Band Mountain in search of rest. That was a particularly sunny and hot...

Sample Tokay Wines in Kaysersberg

by DanielF

Kaysersberg, crossed by the small river Weiss, which here rather looks like a stream, is another of the most popular destinations in Alsace. Enjoy the charm of the riverside old houses and climb the hill where the fortress stands to observe the panorama. Wander the streets of the medieval core, with a 13th century church, a Renaissance town hall and a fortified bridge. Finish your Kaysersberg experience sampling some Tokay wines. The town is particularly known for this cépage, which was brought in here from Hungary in the 16th century and has been grown in the area ever since.

Escape the Crowds in Bergheim

by DanielF

For a strange reason, tourists tend not to be very imaginative and always follow obediently the dictates of travel guides. For this reason, the tide of visitors can turn a charming place into a nightmare, whereas similarly valuable sites remain in the most opprobious ostracism. This is also the case of Alsace: unknown places are just a few kilometers away from overcrowded towns like Riquewihr or Kayserberg. These places, rich in art and history, should not be skipped in an Alsatian tour by any means; but he who wants to visit a typical Alsatian place without the crowds, then Bergheim could be a perfect choice amongst many others. Bergheim has indeed everything you expect for the perfect Alsatian experience: half-timbered coulourful houses, picturesque flower pots and town fountains, vineyards and a rest of the town fortifications, including an impressive watch tower. And yes, very few...

Watch the Dolter in Riquewihr

by DanielF

Nearby Riquewihr is listed as another of the Most beautiful villages in France. Unlike most of the villages and towns in Alsace, Riquewihr was barely affected by the destructions of the many wars that have taken place in this region. An exceptionally preserved heritage makes of it the most visited of the towns in the Route of the Alsatian Wines. Thus, ten times more visitors as there are inhabitants can usually be found wandering in the streets of Riquewihr during weekends and holiday periods. The presence of coach parties in Alsace is, however, not as overwhelming as in other areas and most of the visitors are families and couples who fill the town a great festive atmosphere. If you still prefer more relaxed places and do not want to miss the great historical landmarks that Riquewihr has to offer, then you should opt for visiting during weekdays and preferably out of Summer.Riquewihr...

Learn about Storks and Otters in Hunawihr

by DanielF

As we were explained, the name Hunawihr refers to the first lords of the town, back in the early Middle Ages. Not surprisingly, the feudal lord was called Huno and his wife was called Huna!!. The latter was declared a Saint and, in the subsequent centuries, its relics attracted a significant number of pilgrims to Hunawihr.Hunawihr makes part of the 149 villages which have been labeled as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France ("The most beautiful villages of France"), an independent association, which aims to promote and enhance the beauty and picturesquism of small historical towns in France. The importance of the monuments of Hunawihr more than justifies the granting of this label of quality. The main attractions include a XVI Century Town Hall, a Renaissance fountain dedicated to Saint Huna, and the XVI century Church of Saint James, with an adjacent fortified cemetery. But the real...

Visit the Twisted Steeple in Niedermorschwihr

by DanielF

Our itinerary on the Wine Route leads us to Niedermoschwihr as next destination, just a tiny but picture perfect village in the bottom of a valley surrounded by exuberant vineyards. The main building in the town, the church of Saint Gall and Saint Weldelin, stands amidst the quaint half-timbered winegrowers homes. Its twisted steeple, visible from the distance, is its most remarkable feature.

Be delighted by the Charms of Obernai

by DanielF

Obernai is one of the largest towns in the Route des Vins. It is also one of the closest to Strasburg. Through the centuries, the town has kept a remarkable significance and a wealth of styles, from Medieval to Régence can still be admired in the well kept historical area of Obernai. There are rests of the former town walls, a belfry, several historical houses, including the Wheat Hall, and a fountain dedicated to Saint Odille, the Saint Patroness of Alsace.

Natzweiler-Struthof Concentration Camp

by hollykate

This is something everyone should experience. If you are in the area, try to get here. It's a sad, yet informative tour that you can partake in. Some of the huts here collapsed before the 1950s, but some still remain. There was a big monument with a human shape carved out of it to represent all of the lives lost. There was also a memorium with a flowered cross in a large, dug-out pit to remember the victims. Spend some time to think about all that happened. Everyone needs to learn about the Holocaust so that nothing like it will happen again.
