Wissembourg

by tini58de

Wissembourg is about 60 km north of Strasbourg. The little town has many treasures to be found, like the red sandstone of Saint Peter and Paul Abbey church (13th century), the fascinating Salt House and the picturesque Bruch quarter on the banks of the river Lauter. For more information, please have a look at my Wissembourg page.

Riquewihr

by tini58de

Riquewihr is one of the most popular small Alsacian villages - and that is for a good reason! The old wood timbered houses are well preserved and decorated with flowers and the narrow cobble stone streets add to a romantic atmosphere. But there are also plenty of tourists who enjoy all this! Don't miss climbing the tower and enjoy both the museum inside and the view!

Kaysersberg

by tini58de

Kaysersberg is a lovely village with lots of history to it. It is so much fun to stroll around the place! Another very enjoyable visit is the castle that can be climbed! You have a wonderful view across the countryside from there.

Eguisheim

by tini58de

Eguisheim is a beautiful village surrounded by vinyards. So many storks were all over the place - it was a fantastic atmosphere! We were lucky to also visit a wonderful fleamarket there AND we did go to a vinery (but just to visit). Very laid back place, which I enjoyed enormoulsly!

Colmar

by tini58de

It took years until I finally got to visit Colmar. Such a wonderful place: rather small, but with beautifully restored timber houses with multicolored roof tiles, arched bridges across the Lauch river, an impressiv Church of St. Martin, and a 13th century Dominican monastery which now houses the Unterlinden Museum. I was totally banned by Colmar and can only recommend it!For more information, please have a look at my Colmar page

Colmar

by MichaelFalk1969

Colmar - almost like an identical twin to Strasbourg - has a magnificent cathedral (St. Martin`s) and a picture-perfect Old Town with lots of half-timbered buildings. The "Little Venice"-quarter on an island is especially nice with lots of canals and bridges. You can even find a copy of the Liberty Statue (12 meters high) in Colmar.

Riquewihr

by MichaelFalk1969

The small village of Riquewihr (1200 inhabitants - not counting the tourists) has an almost perfectly preserved Old Town. It is one of the prettiest villages in Alsace and France, yet very crowded with tourists. In this regard, it reminded me very much of Rothenburg or Heidelberg in Germany or San Gimignano in Tuscany. So it might be a wise decision to arrive early before the tour busses start rolling. It is also quite expensive due to its popularity. Nevertheless: an absolute must-see.

Haute - Koenigsbourg

by MichaelFalk1969

Haute Koenigsbourg is the most important castle of Alsace, pretty well preserved and with fine views on the surrounding countryside. It is also one of the biggest castles in Central Europe. It must have been nearly impregnable in medieval times!

Strasbourg

by MichaelFalk1969

Strasbourgs Old Town gives testimony to the fact that Alsace was a very prosperous region in the Middle Ages. The magnificent cathedral (Straßburger Münster) dominates the city. There are many fine ensembles of half-timbered architecture, especially around the beautiful cathedral square and in the "Gerberviertel" (tanner`s quarter). As the Old Town (Ile de la Cite) is built on an island, many canals flow through the city (you can do boat trips, too). As to indoor activities, the Beaux-Arts Museum features many fine pantings.

Domaine Albert Mann

by maartenw

Albert Mann is a rising star in Alsatian wines. It's not yet as famous (= not as expensive) as some others in the area but their reputation is growing rapidly. Albert Mann was in fact recommended to us by the sommelier of L'Auberge de l'Ill. Indeed their pinot noir (Alsatian red wine) was outstanding so we decided to add a visit to their domaine.
