The city of the doctor Schweitzer

by phil1908

when you're in Alsace, take a break in a village called KAYSERBERG. it's where the doctor Schweitzer is borned, but except the museum offering you the all story of his life, the houses and the streets are so particular, a lot of flowers in any case, without forgetting the castle offering you from the top a large view on the suburbs

If you're into such things...the area north-west of Haguenau (northern Alsace) along the German border is full of castles and ruins. Here is a view from the top of Falkenstein castle, one of the existing castles.

The Alsace Wine Route

by btex

The Alsace Wine Route stretches from Thann to Marlenheim. I just saw the part near Colmar - in one day, I visited towns such as Ingersheim, Kayserberg, Riguewihr, etc.... I made the decision to walk from Colmar up into the wine route...that wasn't the best of ideas. I walked and walked and walked...it seemed like I walked for about 8 hours. I also got lost...and used my French to ask directions from a German-speaking farmer near Bergheim. Eventually, I made it back to Colmar...my big tip is...rent a car...take the bus. By the way, the wine route is great. If you like wine, grapevines, countryside, hillside castles, and medieval architecture, the Alsace Wine Route is not to be missed.

Cathedral

by btex

I saw many cathedrals while in Europe, and, after a while, they all started to look alike...then I came to Strasbourg. I had never seen one like this; it seemed to me that you might see a building like this on a foreign planet. It's in a gothic style - they began building it in 1284 - and a Roman temple was originally on the site. Inside there's an astronomical clock and 328 steps (no, I didn't count them) that reach to the the belfry where you'll get a great view of the city.

A part of Colmar is called 'Petite Venise' and you just have to take a walk along the path, which follows the river. This quarter has been beautifully restored and is just charming with flowers in every corner.

Colmar, capital of the...

by naranja

Colmar, capital of the département Haut-Rhin, lies on the river Lauch. Stroll through the narrow alleys and admire the beautiful houses, have a glass of pastis as the French do. By the way, this is how I love it, with a bit of grenadine sirup, which gives it a nice red color and a tangy flavour, it is called 'tomate'. A votre Santé!

by naranja

Riquewihr is the most charming village in Alsace, with its 16th century image nearly unchanged. For many tourists is this the typical Alsacian winetown and it can be very crowded during the warm summer month or during harvest season.
