Arcachon Things to Do

  • Dune du Pyla

If you enjoy frolicking in the sand, then the Dune du Pyla (often also spelled Dune du Pilat) is the place to be! An estimated 60,000,000 m3 of sand, 108m high, more than 2,700m long and 500m wide make the dune the biggest in Europe. Naturally, this attracts tourists en masse, so that more than 1,000,000 people visit the dune every year. You...

  • Arcachon itself...

... is not exactly a beautiful place. You'll find a lot of boring concrete buildings without charm as well as some more beautiful villas that are, however, in most cases private property and therefore inaccessible. Strolling through the streets of Arcachon is not much fun, so you better go back to one of the beaches and enjoy life there. If you...

  • Beaches!

The no.1 reason to come to Arcachon or Cap-Ferret are their beaches. The whole shore is one long stretch of fine sandy beaches. Being familiar with the English pebbly beaches, I had almost forgotten how nice it is to walk through fine sand or to enjoy a bath without teetering to the water like a stork. Cap-Ferret's most beautiful and most easily...

Arcachon Restaurants

  • Comfortable eating in a cozy environment

Lunch is a pleasant event in a timeless environment. A short ride along the bay outside of Arcachon in the Pyla sur Mer village is a delightful small restaurant run by Nadia and her friendly staff. Family food served copiously. Reasonable prices and friendly service. In the warmer months the patio is open and you can eat under the chenes. A...

  • Good seafood

The manager at the Arc hotel recommends this one. Fresh seafood, but they don't have #2 oysters. I had fish soup to start, and monkfish to follow. They were both delicious.

A great place to watch the sunset is the sand dune of Pilat. Don't forget to bring a bottle of Bordeaux :).
To get there you'll need your own transport (unless you're staying at one of the campgrounds along the dune), as the bus service stops at around 7pm.

  • From Bordeaux Airport to Arcachon

My journey to Arcachon started at Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport from where it took the Jetbus to the train station Bordeaux St. Jean. The bus leaves the airport every 45 minutes and the journey into town takes from 30-60 minutes depending on the traffic situation. The single trip costs 7 EUR.At Bordeaux-St. Jean I jumped on one of the many trains to...

  • Around the Bassin by boat

Being a seaside town Arcachon certainly also offers a couple of boat connection across the bassin. Apart from different cruises with dinner and/or wine tasting there are regular ferry connections to Cap Ferret, Andernos and Le Canon. Most tours and ferries just operate during the summer months, other connections are less frequent in off-season.

Arcachon Warnings and Dangers

  • No food, no bus, no shops

We visited Cap-Ferret in late March on a beautiful warm day. There were hardly any clouds in the sky, the water of the Atlantic Ocean was warm enough to bathe your feet in it, the sun was blazing. One should think that this would make Cap-Ferret a popular place to visit even at that time of the year. Not a bit of it! It's as dead as a holiday...

Climbing up is tiring, but climbing down this dune could be very dangerous. On this occassion, I saw a lady being helped to descend the dune as she cold not do it by herself.

  • A SHAGGY STORY

Be careful that your boyfriend doesn't go off with a dog!!! We saw quite a few dogs in Arcachon - strangely enough most of them were a lot friendlier than your average mutt! Here is a photo of Greg with his new `best friend` we found lounging on the beach (wouldn't leave Greg alone).

Arcachon Tourist Traps

Restaurants alongside the waterfront seemed a little overpriced and a big beacon for the hungry tourist. Try going inland a bit where the food appeared cheaper.

Arcachon What to Pack

  • Go with your own water if you can.

You dont really need a back pack, as it would become an additional burden for the climb. It is cold up there, especially in winter. So, go with a good jacket. Camera is a must.

  • DON'T BOTHER WITH THE KITCHEN SINK

If you are camping - beware of the ants and keep anything sweet out of your tent. Walking on the dunes is best done bare-footed, try not to bring anything that will be ruined by sand (there is loads of the stuff!). If you plan a lot of walking - plasters to help heal those blisters. A firm sleeping mat is always essential for those long nights...
