We visited Cap-Ferret in late March on a beautiful warm day. There were hardly any clouds in the sky, the water of the Atlantic Ocean was warm enough to bathe your feet in it, the sun was blazing. One should think that this would make Cap-Ferret a popular place to visit even at that time of the year. Not a bit of it! It's as dead as a holiday resort can be.
While we enjoyed having the whole place for ourselves (particularly the beach which must be horribly crowded in summer), we ended up looking for something to eat for two hours! After strolling through basically every street of Cap-Ferret (and being followed by a hungry-looking dog that probably would have eaten our carcasses the minute we had died) we ended up at the jetty for the ferry to Arcachon. This was literally the only place where food was available - two cafes were open and even served food throughout the afternoon.
The same disastrous state is true for shops: the pharmacy opened for an hour or so in the afternoon, as did the newsagent (who was astonishingly well equipped), but an open supermarket could not be found. You should also note that there are only a few buses going to or leaving from Cap-Ferret in winter. And the winter is long here: the official winter timetable for the bus is active from 1st September to 30th June!!!
So if you want to enjoy Cap-Ferret without tourists, you'd better come by car and bring a lot of food with you.

Be careful that your boyfriend doesn't go off with a dog!!! We saw quite a few dogs in Arcachon - strangely enough most of them were a lot friendlier than your average mutt! Here is a photo of Greg with his new `best friend` we found lounging on the beach (wouldn't leave Greg alone).

be aware of this word, "baines" it signifies MORTAL DANGER, especially for children and weak swimmers. These baines are very rares (there are a few other examples in the States and in Australia) but arre very frequent in this region.
In some places, the sand banks which are more or less visibles, create small bays full of calm water. These are the "baines". The waves crash into another sand bank which is invisible, and only the foam actually soaks into these naturel swimming pools, which are perfect for frolicking in. However, they always get too full, and that is when tney get dangerous. The suddently empty creating extremely violent currents which are strong enough to drag even the strongets swimmer straight out to sea. Panic and extenuating efforts to swim back on to the beach are the cause of numerous drownings every year.
the only thing to so is to stay calm and let your body follow the current and try to attract the attention of hte lifeguards. Thse currents always lead out to the sea, and then the incoming tide can bring you backtowards the beach.... a few hundred meters away.
so take care, when you go to hte ocean (not the bassin)

Climbing up is tiring, but climbing down this dune could be very dangerous. On this occassion, I saw a lady being helped to descend the dune as she cold not do it by herself.

a lot of french have a dog (even 2or 3....), so take care when you walk in the streets or may be if you walk on sheats you could play loto
