Hotel Pontet-Hostellerie Maleville: Good food and a view on the river

Restaurant on the Dordogne River

We have our big meal at noon so the morning always involves a restaurant search. There is actually quite a choice for such a small town.

We finally settled on the Hotel Pontet-Hostellerie Maleville right on the river. They advertised a rabbit in mustard sauce as a special. When we went in to be seated, the maitre told us the special was for local workmen, not the general public. We succeeded in persuading him to serve us the workman’s lunch because we wanted to try the rabbit in mustard sauce. My grandfather used to raise rabbits and I developed a fondness for them. It's a little hard to find rabbit on menus in the US so France is always a treat.

Favorite Dish: We started with a walnut liqueur as an aperitif, a local specialty. Then we had the menu du jour. The rabbit in mustard sauce was served with some greens and pommes sarladaises . . . really delicious. We had a Bergerac wine an excellent apple tart and my coffee . . . all for 40 euros. Amazing!

The town La Roque Gageac

This restaurant is located in a hotel in the town La Roque Gageac...just down the road from Beynac. I think I had the best meal of the trip here! Oysters on the half shell, but they'd been lightly poached in cream, with truffles. oh yum. I rarely order steaks, but this filet de boeuf Limosine was extraordinary. Perfectly done, dark pink but not red, surrounded by tiny little raviolis filled with foie gras. Again, we ordered from the choice of menus...mine was a bit more, but still, with wine, coffee (and actually we had drinks before dinner, too) the tab was 102 euro.

Favorite Dish: Ah. The desert! Mille Fleur, but instead of pastry, there were paper thin discs of spun sugar, and the sweet cream was dressed with beautiful red berries-- raspberries, strawberries and currants.

Pretty view of the town

Beautiful dining room, elegant and professional. We ordered one of the menus, and enjoyed foie gras, and breast of duck in a ginger/honey sauce. With a bottle of "local" wine (Bergerac) it was better than many meals we've had in Paris! Two people can have a full meal here, with wine and coffee, for 80 Euros.

Favorite Dish: The duck was done perfectly....medium rare.
