Favorite thing: The 'Esplanade des Quinconces' is a huge promenade that takes up more than 12 hectares in the heart of Bordeaux by the river 'la Garonne'.

Replacing the 15th century Château de Trompette, this vast space of tree-lined esplanade, with statues and fountains, was created in 1827-59.

Favorite thing: Visit Sauternes at 80 Km in the North from Bordeaux. Here is one of the most famous vineyard of the area. They make a sweet white wine of which particular taste is given by a mushroom which grows on the vine at Fall when the weather is wet. The best of the best is the Chateau d'Yquem. Pretty good but very expensive.

Favorite thing: Of course, you have to go to the Wineyards: Saint Emilion is the greatest touristical place to visit, but there are so many little 'chateaux' too and many caves to explore with many degustations!!

Fondest memory: What I loved, while being in Bordeaux is the magnificient landscapes all around the city : the sea, the wineyards, the proximity of Spain (130 miles)...

Dowtown Bordeaux, you must have a drink at the 'Place de la Victoire', walk through St Catherine Street, go to the 'Place des Quinquonces', walk by the Garonne riverside!

Favorite thing: I just had to wait in Hendaye because my train was leaving only in the evening. From the station to the beach is a very nice way along the water, so you can make some kilometres with changing views to Hondarribia, which is the Spanish border town. You can go there by boatride. Beautiful place!

Favorite thing: The valley of the Dordogne river: east of Bordeaux you find one of the most beautiful river valleys in France. It is a wonderful combination of the oldest human paintings (Lascaux - see Travelogue on my France page) with medieval castles, small and romantic villages, the wines of Bergerac and allways again and again the rock formations.

Fondest memory: pic shows: the village of Beynac at the Dordogne typically located under one of the limestone rocks

Favorite thing: Chateau La Brède, a few km south of Bordeaux was the home of Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de Labrède et Montesquieu. He was one of the most important philosophus of the 17th century, worldfamous for his writings which helped to prepare the way for the French Revolution. Most of his time he spent in Bordeaux where he was the president of the city parliament for decades.

Favorite thing: Place de la Comedie is the heart of the city center in Bordeaux. It is located on the site of a Roman Forum and just opposite you find the Grand Theatre.
