The Cathedral St Andre is a very impressive building from the outside. Only a small part of the cathedrale still has some of its original walls dating back to the 9th century. The cathedrale seems a bit odd as you look at the front facade of the building you will note that the buttresses and the rest of the cathedrale were either from a different century, or weren't steamed blasted. We were walking around trying to get our bearings when we approached this huge open area, almost like a square or plaza. Located here is this building, somehwhat grand and impressive with its white wash finish. Neither of us had any idea what this building was but we did spot a few statues of what looks like judges guarding each side of the building. I later learned that this buiding is the Palace of Justice. Located in the same "square" is the Hospital. Leave a Comment

The only part left of the first Counter Reformation Church built in Bordeaux is this monastic church for the Carthusian Monks. The church was quite small but impressive. Across the street from the church is the cementary and behind the church is the War Memorial. Leave a Comment Address: Rue François-de-Sourdis

The Tour Pey- Berland is St Andre's Cathedral's bell tower and a fine example of the "Flamboyant Gothic" style with a 19th century staute of Notre Dame-d'Aquitaine. The tower holds the clocks that goes with St Andre's cathedral and was build in 1440. I was amazed to see that along with St Michel's Basilica, St Andre's Cathedral also has a seperate tower. Not sure what the reason behind this is. Leave a Comment Address: Place Pey BerlandPhone: 33 5 56 52 68 10

First bridge across the Garonne, it was built between 1810 and 1822 on behalf of Napoléon Premier. For 12 years the builders had to cope with strong currents, and only with an english equipment could the stabilize the piles. It has 17 piles (note this is the same count as the letters in "Napoléon Bonaparte") with a white medallion. The bridge was the only one until 1965, and was been recently reinforced for the tramway and the Airbus barges. Though we couldnt do a tour of this church because of the time of the day, but it is very attractive and its considered one of the Land marks on this section of Bordeaux called La Bastide. Leave a Comment Directions: Its on Avenue Thiers, about 250meters after crossing Pont de Pierre.

It's a nice building to see from the outside but the inside is stunning. And fortunately you can make pictures as long as you don't get any further then the small steps that lead up to the main staircase... The gards were looking and laughing a bit when i started to make pictures but who cares.. i have them.. Leave a Comment

Or the Hotel de Ville (city hall). It used to be the old archbishop's palace and can be dated back to the early middle-ages. In 1771 archbischop Ferdinand-Maximilien Meriadec de Rohan decided to restructure the building and give it its present look. The front and the back of the main structure are identical. The 2 pavillions are now part of the museum of fine arts. Leave a Comment

This is THE landmark in Bordeaux i would say. Together with the tower that stands next to it. Like most cathedrals i like the outside more then the inside. But that's a very personal thing From the original building dating back to 1096 there is only a small part of the outer walls reserved. I was already wondering since one of the sides of the cathedral doesn't completely seem to fitt with the rest. During the 14th till the 16th century the cathedral underwent some major changes. It took most of the 19th century to make all the necessary restaurations to the building Leave a Comment

Inaugurated on the 7th April 1780 with a performance of "Athalie," finest building designed by the architect Louis, stands on the site of the Gallo-Roma Tutelle Pillars, the forum in the 3rd century city. Twelve Corinthian columns support the entablature on the peristyle that is , in fact, an audacious piece of bulding for it is held by a metal tie placed inside the construction, compensating for the enormous thrusts fro the flat vaulting. This invention remained famous and is known as "Mr. Louis Nail. " Above it are the twelve statues by Berruer and Van Den Drix, representing the nine Muses, Juno, Venus and Minerva Leave a Comment
