Notre Dame Church by ceswho This Jesiut-style chrch designed by Michel de Plessy is a fine example of 17th century architecture. Its single barrel-vaulted nave highlights the eelgance of the bakustrade and wrought ironworks in the chancel. It is usual to consider it is having a worldly charm and Francois Mauriac asserted that it was a "harmonious and moderate church, warm in winter, a place to which those who succeed in establishing themselves a life on earth that provides all the creature comforts, come to ensure the eternity will give them as much pleasure." by smschley This cathedral has quite some history attached to it. In 1137, the future King Louis VII - he who kicked off Bordeaux' worldwide reputation for wine - married Eleanor of Aquitaine here. The exterior wall of the nave dates right back to 1096; most of the rest of the structure was built in the 13th and 14th centuries. The interior, reached via the newly cleaned north portal, is much more attractive than the stained, crumbling exterior. You can visit the cathedral daily. Behind the choir, the 50m (164ft) belfry, the 15th-century Tour Pey-Berland, can be climbed (for a fee). The cathedral and belfry are easy to find, across from the city hall. Leave a Comment

Pont de Pierre - mi's by black_mimi99 The 'Pont de Pierre' was commissioned by Napoleon. It was finished in 1822. This "Stone Bridge" is almost 500 meter long. It used to be a toll bridge, but in 1861 the town bought it and since then it has been free. This is definitely one of the most beautiful bridges in France, its beauty is only comparable to the ones in Paris. And I love to come here at nite cos of the beauty from the lights and its amazed.... Leave a Comment

by lorgnierl This monumental 11th century church combines Roman and Gothic styles; its lack of architectural unity is all part of its charm. Viollet le duc made a mould of the statuary of the 13th century Porte Royale in order to restore the central portal of Notre Dame de Paris. The interior houses numerous treasures including Spanish and Italian paintings and illuminations In accordance with local tradition, hte 15th century bell tower stands separate from the church offering an impressive panoramic view of the city CATHEDRALE ST ANDRE : More ! by lorgnierl the chamber of commerce and customs service still reside in one of the city's most majestic palaces, a reminder of the grandiose history of local trade built from 1730 to 1735 according to the designs of Gabriel, the father/son architectural team (also responsible for the Trianon and the opera of the chateau de Versailles, the Hotel Crillon, place de la Concorde and the Pont royal in Paris) the building is a magnificient example of classic french style at its purest the south pavilion , the only one open to the public is home to the musee national des douanes.
