  • Notre Dame Church - Bordeaux
    Notre Dame Church

This Jesiut-style chrch designed by Michel de Plessy is a fine example of 17th century architecture. Its single barrel-vaulted nave highlights the eelgance of the bakustrade and wrought ironworks in the chancel. It is usual to consider it is having a worldly charm and Francois Mauriac asserted that it was a "harmonious and moderate church, warm in winter, a place to which those who succeed in establishing themselves a life on earth that provides all the creature comforts, come to ensure the eternity will give them as much pleasure."

This cathedral has quite some history attached to it. In 1137, the future King Louis VII - he who kicked off Bordeaux' worldwide reputation for wine - married Eleanor of Aquitaine here. The exterior wall of the nave dates right back to 1096; most of the rest of the structure was built in the 13th and 14th centuries. The interior, reached via the newly cleaned north portal, is much more attractive than the stained, crumbling exterior. You can visit the cathedral daily. Behind the choir, the 50m (164ft) belfry, the 15th-century Tour Pey-Berland, can be climbed (for a fee). The cathedral and belfry are easy to find, across from the city hall.

The 'Pont de Pierre' was commissioned by Napoleon. It was finished in 1822. This "Stone Bridge" is almost 500 meter long. It used to be a toll bridge, but in 1861 the town bought it and since then it has been free. This is definitely one of the most beautiful bridges in France, its beauty is only comparable to the ones in Paris.

And I love to come here at nite cos of the beauty from the lights and its amazed....

The majestic monument with fountains in honour of Girondists - deputies of Revolution towers at the Esplanade des Quinconces. The monument is 50 m high. At the top we can see a statue of Freedom. At the bootom of the monument we can see two fountains "Triumph of Respublique" and "Triuumph of Concorde". The monument was installed in 1902.

The bottom part of the column is decorated with various symbolical figures, including the gallic cock. In 1943 fascists disassembled the column to take advantage of 52 tons of bronze. The restoration of the column finished in 1983.

The Belfry for Bordeaux's medieval city hall has stood guard over the intersection of the cours Victor Hugo and the street St James since the 14th century
Bordeaux's big ben is one of the city's most striking emblems
a walk towards St Eloi takes you back in the time to the middle ages as you wander past the "rue neuve" and the "grosse cloche"
the weight of the centuries mixes effortlessly with modern everyday life
Montaigne used to live on the 25th of rue Rousselle

This monumental 11th century church combines Roman and Gothic styles; its lack of architectural unity is all part of its charm. Viollet le duc made a mould of the statuary of the 13th century Porte Royale in order to restore the central portal of Notre Dame de Paris. The interior houses numerous treasures including Spanish and Italian paintings and illuminations In accordance with local tradition, hte 15th century bell tower stands separate from the church offering an impressive panoramic view of the city

Vestiges of a roman amphitheatre that once held 10 000 spectators

Its the oldest evidence of the roman town (Burdigalia) that is still visible. From this Gaullic Roman amphitheatre, une can see the monumental gates as well as the departure of some walls and arcatures, integrated in the surrunding gardens and houses. This amphitheatre was built outside the walls of the castrum. Legend (which has its origin in the middle age litterature) says that Charlemegne had buildt it for his wife Galiene, whereas in actually from the 2nd century
The edifice, which was modestly built with rubble stones and bricks, measured roughly 133 meters by 111, with an arena measuring 70 meters by 47, which are standard dimensions for a such a work.It consisted of seven elliptic coronas, divided into 64 rows by lateral walls that have now disappeared, and covered with wooden piers supported by ledgers (horizontal pieces of wood). The latter were driven into the brickwork; throught holes that can still be seen in the walls
Elliptic in shape, it was probability meant for games and for combat between gladiators. It s very similar in size and spatial organization to the arenas of Arles and Nimes
In the 7tyh century, the Palais Gallienserved as a shelter for thieves and protitutes and it was rumoured that it was a meeting place for withches, until a mayor transformed it into a public quarry during the french revolution

the chamber of commerce and customs service still reside in one of the city's most majestic palaces, a reminder of the grandiose history of local trade
built from 1730 to 1735 according to the designs of Gabriel, the father/son architectural team (also responsible for the Trianon and the opera of the chateau de Versailles, the Hotel Crillon, place de la Concorde and the Pont royal in Paris)
the building is a magnificient example of classic french style at its purest
the south pavilion , the only one open to the public is home to the musee national des douanes. Its collection recounts the evolution of one of the oldest customs institutions evoking the technical side of the necoiunters between smuggles and customs agents over the ages
