Le Vieux Four: Perfect Pizzas!

Eating in the grotto - Le Vieux Four

Run by a friendly family, the Vieux Four (= Old Oven) is THE place to eat at Brantôme! We came there on a March evening and didn't expect too much - after all, a pizza place in a tourist destination can be a hit-and-miss kind of thing. However, when we entered the building which is partly a grotto (a so-called troglodyte building which is not uncommon in the area), we were thrilled to see a large stone oven with the cook shoving in a delicious-looking pizza. The whole place smelled of great Italian food, so we gave it a try. It was a great decision. Le Vieux Four takes pizza-making to another level, as they add uncommon ingredients such as goat's cheese, potatoes or the like. The staff was very friendly and funny and we had some of the best pizza in ages - and were amazed at the good value afterwards.

Favorite Dish: I had "Pizza Montagnard" which was super-delicious, my wife went for "Pizza Brantômaise" which was great as well.

We drove up to Brantome from Domme, a long trip, visited the Abbey and were hungry. We looked at the beautiful Moulin de l'Abbaye and discovered it cost about twice what we wanted to pay.

Hence, we walked back along the Dronne River past the abbey and out the gate into Place Charles de Gaulle where there were several restaurants. We looked at the menus and chose the one that offered something we knew we would enjoy.

We were seated under a canopy right beside the river. Ed had a view of the lovely bridge and I had the abbey view. There were trout swimming in the river beneath us, ducks happily begging for baguette crumbs and a very pleasant wait staff seeing that we enjoyed our lunch.

Favorite Dish: I don't even remember what we had although I usually order confit de canard if it's available and Ed usually orders salmon or some fish. Whatever we had, it was tasty. The experience was quite pleasant and the price was very low. It was a very enjoyable experience although not a culinary "find" on this trip.

We would definitely return. It was a most pleasant interlude.

Small terrace overlooking the river Dronne. Ideal location in summer for a romantic dinner. Local ingredients prepared with flair. Friendly staff who speak English

Favorite Dish: Pate de foie gras with onion marmalade and brioche. Try it with a glass of Monbazillac.
