All around Cadilac you'll see the old town wall as part of everyday life. But this house gate-thing i though the best example. Cadillac is really a rather small place but this is a short cut within the walled part to get to a part of another street that would otherwise have cost you 5 minutes extra time to get to via the outside of the walls. I guess it has grwon this way from the time when the town walls still needed defending..

I always love it when a castle is old. And when it has a moat it is perfect. Though in this one i saw several chicken trying to find a daily meal... It is still an imprssive moat and with the height and the tickness of the walls i loved it and wondered how people could have made it that huge back then. It must have been a difficult and very heavy job to do.

Usually the town hall is one of the most important buildings in a place and that is way you can find them on the main square. But in Cadillac that place is rserved for the chateau.
But still the town hall is an interesting building. It is partly town hall (administrative) and a place where festivities can take place like there are so many halls in this area. It doesn't open on a square but the hall has a bit that kind of fuction.

The name of the gate probably refers to the Garonne. The area in which Cadillac is situated is called Entre-deux-Mers (between 2 seas, refering to the Dordogne and the Garonne). Though i haven't been able to find proof of this.
The gate was build in 1315 as part of the defense wall. It was originally just the gate. The 3 top floors were added later.

It was just my luck that only on the day i was in Cadillac the chateau was closed. Appartemtly there was some meeting of some sorts. I saw people walking in and out but to me the entrance remained closed. I didn“t even manage to be let in for just a picture of the court yard. highly fustrating.
Usually the chateau should be open in summer (1 june till 30 september) every day from 10 am till 6 pm. From 1st of october till the end of may the chateau is opened every day except on mondays. And the hours are a bit more restricted as well. 10 am till 12.30 and from 14.00 till 17.30. Closed on 1 january, 1 may and 25 december.

Unfortunately the chateau was closed

By just hearing the name Cadillac i knew i had to visit the place. I didn?t exactly have a good image of what to expect here. But it sounded so familiar. Whether that has anything to do with the car...
