Cenac-et-St.-Julien is a very small town but it is in the middle of an amazing part of France. If you want to experience small town life and still have access to lots of vacation options, this is the place for you.
There is camping on the river with canoe and kayak rental. You have an easy drive to castles in Castelnaud, Beynac and les Millandes with many others a short drive away. There are several Plus Beaux Villes of France nearby with La Roque Gageac only a 5-minute drive. You can make a day trip to Rocamadour. There are caves aplenty with cave paintings in many of them; there's even one with an electric train inside the cave to save your feet, Rouffignac.
The lovely market town of Sarlat-la-Canéda is a few minute drive north and the marvelous le Perigord Restaurant is on the way. We loved the Cabanes de Breuil, an ecomusée. The wonderful museum of prehistory is at Les Eyzies just past Sarlat. The town of Perigeux is nearby and Brantome is a good day trip.
