Once in the Cave, we were in a large cavern known as the "Hall of the Bulls." It is about 20 metres long, and between 5.5 and 7.5 metres wide.

In here, we were told to try and find the Bulls. Painted in Palaeolithic art form, there were 130 figures, including animals and geometric signs.
Our guide described to us how clever they were painting. They didn't just paint "willy nilly," they actually chose the best rocks to paint the figure, so the Bull or whatever, would come out more life-like!
We were led through the different named sections of the Cave and at each, we stopped and were given information on it.

What I suggest, as I haven't photo's, and you won't either if you go, is to have a look and a read at the excellent website, it will fill you in on everything.

Lascaux Caves

I had read and seen documentaries on Lascaux Cave's, they sounded so good, they were added to our road trip of France.

About the Caves...........
As far as they know, the paintings in the Cave were done between 15,000 and 17,000 years ago.
The Caves weren't discovered until 1940, when four teenage boys were exploring the hills above the Vezere River near the town of Montignac, and happened to stumble on this amazing archaeological discovery. A large pine tree had fallen and left a hole in the hillside, and boys being boys, clambered in and found the marvellous Cave.

You have to do a guided tour to view a "REPLICA CAVE"
Now, I know what you are probably thinking, this isn't worth seeing, it's not the real thing, but believe me, it is!
The original cave is not open to the public because of the dangerous bacteria human's were bringing into the Cave.

Instead, they built a replica, which is within 99.9% of being the same as the original.
Our guide told us the story of the boys, who are old men now, and I think only one may be alive, and all about the Cave, and how careful they were building the replica. It was very interesting!

NO PHOTO'S ARE ALLOWED, I thought disappointing , seeing we weren't in the original cave, and the excellent website shows the inside of the cave.

The famous Lascaux caves are located close to Montignac.

What you must do if you wish to visit in high season, is to go to the booking office which is in the Montignac Information Centre building.
This is where you book a time for a tour in your language, and pay for the tour.
We booked our tour, and then had to wait about 1.5 hours, so we did some sightseeing before going to the caves.
In July and August, 2,000 tickets a day go on sale at 9 am at the booking office in Montignac. Tickets are not available in advance. Other times of the year, tickets are sold at the site on a first come, first served basis, even then, you may have to wait quite a while for a tour.
Tours are given in English and French

TOUR PRICES IN 2011 ......Adults 9euros.
