During the 12C there were several subjects and sites on a church where sculpture appeared. The first were capitals and bas-reliefs. The development of geometric and floral elements were first and followed by animals and fantastic creatures and eventually by human forms. If possible all were used on the building being created. As skill increased, some items could be started by assistants and in certain places theses were even finished by lesser workers. In the 12C the creation of modillions below the eaves of rounded parts of the building came into style when master masons were at work. Note that in the first picture you can see that floral patterns are made on the other surfaces as well.

Only a few rulers were in a place where one could employ some of the earliest sculptors. One such place was at Lescar. It was only one hundred years after sculpture redeveloped. It began in the area of Moissac and Toulouse where such workers had created the technics. Around 1150 it became possible to send artists further away as independent masters who could create. Most stayed very close to Toulouse in the 12 C, with the most distant ones being at Autun and Vezelay. Probably the work at Lescar was done by a couple of masters and several assistants. As part of their work they also created the modillions on the East end of the chevet..

The church has a Benedictine plan. The central nave has 5 square bays covered by plain round topped sides both crossways and along the lateral sides. The aisle bays are covered crossways in the same way but at much lower height with lateral small outside windows near the top . At the east end are the central large apse containing a double window at the end and a single window on each side. The two absidioles end in berceaux with no windows. The right one has an altar of the Last Supper made from Pyrenees marble.

Mosaic Art floor and wall figured and geometric mosaic work disappeared in Western Europe after the 6C. It did continued as geometric patterns in Islamic Spain. It revived in the 11C in Sicily and in the 12C Venice became world famous for it. It began to be used occasionally in other places in Europe as well. The first use in France (or more properly, Bearn) was probably related to the results of the First Crusade. The chevet floor near the east end has two large areas covered with mosaic, some humans and an array of animals, hunting dogs, boars, a leopard and birds.

The Lescar cathedral was essentially built between 1120 and 1145. It has a length of 60 m and a height at the crossing of 27m. The chevet has a central apse that is 12 m wide with lateral absidioles each of 7.5 m. The west end is not embellished but is of marble and the sides are plain. A cloister was on the south side until just before the Revolution. Over the centuries a fire required rebuilding the vault in the nave and damage during the Protestant ascendance in the 16C. Under the outer roofing of the east there is a long array of modllions just beneath the cornices and associated with 6 petaled flowers as added decoration. Further east is an equally od cemetery.
