Hautefort the town, is worth having a drive around after seeing the Chateau. We passed by the Castle walls, through an arch gate, and followed the narrow, one lane road through the town. It was quite pretty, with Rose's hanging over fence's and many old homes. In the main part of town was an old well, and what looked to be a Church, was where the tourist information was located.

We didn't get to see all the gardens as the Chateau was closed, but we did manage to view quite a bit from the hillside.
There used to be Formal gardens dating back to the 17th century, but they are no longer here.
In 1853, they were completely re-done on the orders of Charlotte de Hautefort and again between the years from 1950 to 1980 by the Baron and Baroness de Bastard.
The parterres have been preserved, but the lawn and flowers have disappeared to make way for the box hedges and topiary and the north terrace has also been planted with box hedges, alternating with rows of yew trees.
Even though and "all green" garden, it stills looks great!

Chateau Hautefort is located about halfway between St.Yrieix-La-Perche and Montignac. We were following the D704, when I noticed the Brown tourist signpost. A quick stop in the Car, then a U- turn and we were on our way to the Chateau! Thankgoodness it was only a short drive into the Town and the Chateau!
The Chateau dates back to the year 1000. From the 16th and 17th centuries, the Chateau was worked on by several Architect's making it more modern.
Then, in 1929, Baron Henry de Bastard and his wife Simone, fell in love with the Chateau and bought it, and set about working on the Chateau and its garden's. When her husband died in 1957, she managed to have the work finished, and moved into the Chateau to live in 1965. Unfortunately, in 1968, this was another Chateau that suffered fire, and once again, had to be rebuilt.
Today, as we came closer to this majestic Chateau, that was perched high atop the hill in the Village of Hautefort, I couldn't help but think of all the work that went into the rebuilding of the Chateau, it really is imposing!
I wanted to see the inside, but once again, we were too early, so I had to be content with a walk and a drive around it.

Sunny Montignac with the sluggish Vezere river slipping past, hasn't always been this way. Between 10 and around 50,000 years ago - that's before TV existed, folks - the area was dry and desperately...
