The Church of St.-Avit
4 more images

The west facade is unadorned with only a couple of slit windows. Before it is a fine porch whouse upper platform has beentopped with battlements. A guard walk stretches between the heavy crner towers. (The NW tower has partly fallen away). A lateral view of the church continues the same blank appearance with only a few small high-placed windows. What may have been more light in the chevet is bricked in. The apse is flat and also has a blank wall. If it were not for the forlorn cross at the Southwest edge of the facade, one might not realize that this is a church.

The church interior could not be entered when we were there due to the restoration work. We could only enter the narthex and peer inside. Nevertheless we could visualize its Gothic shape and sturdy vaulting and even see a decorative central bay boss. and an ancient bas-relief.

A Large Fortified Rural Church

Less than 5 miles east of Beaumont-du-Perigord is St.-Avit. It is the site of a one-time Abbet to that saint out in the countryside with a small town (pop.432) next to it. Such a large church is a...
