L'envers du decor: crowded but satisfiying

by PALLINA Written Aug 5, 2010

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Right in the central square of Saint Emilion, just 10 meters from the Tourist Office, this nice restaurant (and wine shop and library as well) offers a big interior gardens and a sharp services (waiters speak a funny French English but better than nothing). Dishes are typical of Aquitaine. Reservations is strongly raccomended.

L'Envers du Decor: Exceptional Food, Laid-Back Atmosphere

We tried two resaurants in Saint Emilion. This one was so good, we didn't need to look further. You get the sense that the employees really enjoy their work and are very good humored. Don't be fooled though, they take their food very seriously and it's fantastic. This was very close to being the best meal we had in France. Reservations are a must!

  • L'Antree: L'Antree-off the beaten path

by montanamagpie Written Jul 14, 2009

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

L'Antree is a charming little restaurant off the beaten path and frequented by more locals than tourists. The food is wonderful and is a great value. The staff are charming, friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is quaint and relaxed. A great selection of music plays inside. L'Antree also sells wine by the bottle to take away. It's definitely worth the search for this little gem. For 16.95 euros one can get a meal consisting of your choice of one each of 3 entrees, 3 plats and 3 desserts. Can't recommend it enough!

Favorite Dish: The entree consisting of smoked salmon, a kind of French guacamole with avocado and tiny anise sprigs on a crusty piece of bread is divine.

Located in part of the 16th century Cloitre des Cordeliers is a wine/drink/light snack shop where you can take a break in the remains of the cloister of the old monastery. The attitude is light and friendly in an informal atmosphere. They serve a selection of modestly priced wines, red, rose, white and sparkling.

Favorite Dish: My glass of sparkling white wine was very refreshing on a warm day in July.

Not only is there a great selection of local wines by the glass, but the tables are made of old wine barrels. The setting is very open, with large beams, lots of air and space. The prices are very reasonable and you can get a very satisfying lunch and glass or two of wine.

Favorite Dish: The wine by the glass menu was excellent, with a glass of wine from as low as 3.50e to 7.50e for the grand cru.

St. Emilion – the class of French wine producers, beautiful old village, hilly, cloisters, and many fancy wine and crystal shops. Area surrounded by hills of grape vines and chateaus. We parked 3 blocks out of town to get in.
