    Colourful Cocks in Sarlat

I normally don't advertise souvenir shops as they tend to sell the usual bric-a-brac and are the same no matter if you are in Paris or Panama. But then you sometimes come across a lovely shop selling local handicrafts of the finest (and in this case) funniest kind. Unfortunately, I have forgotten the name of the shop, but if you come to the corner of Rue Tourny and Rue Munz and see these funny folks looking at you, you are at the right place.

    What to buy: Colourful cocks!

What to pay: No idea - I only took a photo of them...

    Teddies @ Sarlat

This was a shop I came across on my walk in Sarlat. A few years ago, making Teddy Bears was very popular, something, I can't do, but even so, I love looking at them. This shop had lots of Teddies, all very nicely done, and would make a lovely gift for a child. Check it out!

Problems with Hunting & Fishing Gear Souvenirs

    Fishing Gear & More

Being close to the Dordogne River and tributary mountain streams and also the Vezere river, a shop that caters to anglers and hunters is a logical venue in a heavily vacation visitor laden city. The window display was very attractive, but the only thing French was the basket.

What to buy: We were warned by our (Bass Master) fisherman-hunter son that 1) fishing is a global sport and the latest lure made in Finland is immediately available in Little Rock, AR, USA and 2) a fisherman is very specific about things like lures and equipment and only listens to the fish and other experienced fishermen. We would have bought the colorful shirt but he (>100kg; 6'5") is XXXL, a size not stocked in French stores. (Incidentally the shirt and screening were created in Thailand).

Unknown: You Can Buy Limoges Porcelain in Sarlat

by hquittner Written Jun 8, 2009

Broil or Bake Oysters on the Plate

Across from the South side of the Ste.-Marie church are several shops that look like “outlet stores” for Limoges porcelain. We looked in the windows because we were not going Limoges and this is what we saw in one place. We entered and speaking my best French, I inquired if they were broiler safe. She sniffed back that Limoges can take any cooking heat. It should be obvious what they were made for. We have used the plate illustrated for 15 years and can have all sorts of broiled oyster dishes. We just buy them, fresh shucked, save the liquor for stock, make the topping and away we go. We do not need to have guests! Incidentally the shops are informed about shipping rates, VAT refunds and I think there was no import duty.

What to buy: Our trip to the Dordogne overlapped with our retirement and settling in New Orleans. There we had become reacquainted with broiled oysters, a delicacy minimally known, we thought, to French gourmets. The number one version in New Orleans is called “Oysters Rockefeller” and we attempted to serve them with much stress involved. The raw separated oysters are first broiled in their half-shells which are are nestled in rock-salt in trays; a prepared special spinach puree is first placed on each oyster. After broiling they are served in their shells on plates, either removed with tongs or still on their trays. (This is easier done by an attuned restaurant, but many ugly variants exist).

What to pay: I do not think you can bargain.
