Sarlat-le-Canéda is one of the most picturesque villages in the Dordogne and has a wonderful market that people love to visit. If you drive, you need to put your car someplace and while there is pay parking available, there is a huge free parking lot just above the Old Town of Sarlat.

If you are coming in from the south (as we usually do), there are one-way streets when you get toward the center of town. You will be directed left onto D704E going north. This becomes Avenue du General de Gaulle and as you approach the top of the hill, there are two free parking lots. If there are places in the lot on your right (Place Sundhouse), take one. The lot is lined with chestnut trees which give good shade during hot weather and there is a path leading down to the little square opposite Hotel Madeleine. You can follow the main road for another block and turn into the Old Town from there. The chestnut trees are magical in the springtime!

If that lot is full, there is a huge lot on the left side of ave. du Gen. de Gaulle. You will see a small grey building housing a tourist office and behind and above it are hundreds of parking places. There is, unfortunately, no shade here but if you need a parking place, it is just fine. From there cross over to the small parking lot mentioned above and at the rear is the footpath down the hill.

Home to a maze of old lanes, some lovely private courtyards, great architectural details and a fantastic twice-weekly market, Sarlat deserves at least a brief stop during travels in this region.
