    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Boules is still such a popular sport in many parts of France and this region is no exception. The average age is not young but the people we saw playing looked fit and were certainly young at heart.

Ride the waves on the Basque coast!

by kokoryko Written Nov 15, 2009

Oral tradition says that surfing appeared on the Basque coast in 1957, when Californians working for the movie “The sun also rises” from Hemingway’s novel, scenes of which were recorded in Biarritz, imported their long boards to use them on the Biarritz “Chambre d’Amour” beach where they impressed the local pelotaris (Basque pelota players) who soon adopted this sensations full sport needing balance skills and courage.
Few surfers frequented the Basque beaches in the sixties, but surfing became soon very popular in South Western France and many beaches between Hendaye in the south and Lacanau in the North of the Gironde see every summer (and all year long, for some addicts) thousands of people riding the waves of the Atlantic.
It must be a wonderful feeling, riding in front of the breaking wave, but I must confess, I never “achieved” this, as I only tried during one summer without any lesson; there were no surfing schools at that time, and I probably have not the required “gliding feeling”, or did not have a chance to develop it.
Now, every popular beach of Aquitaine has at least one surfing school, where the instructors are very competent, and safety oriented; my kids can witness!
Surfing is nowadays possible all along the Aquitaine beaches.
The website lists the surfing schools you can find in France; French but easy to use: click on the region (eg. Aquitaine) , click then on the area (eg. Cote Basque), you have a list, and on each name of the list, if you click, you have location, contact number, and website. . . . Well done!

Every year on the beaches of Anglet, Hossegor, Lacannau, international competitions take place and even world championships! Must be good surfing spots!
Long board, bodyboard, short boards, whatever, all types of surfing can be practised.

Equipment: On most beaches you can rent surfing equipment.
Surfing addicts usually bring their own equipment

    Saint Palais Fronton

by gwened Written Aug 22, 2014

This is the regional sport of the basques people and by now spread to other countries in the Americas , Spain, and France.

The one at Saint Palais is simple old fashioned and I took some shots to remind me of my younger days when my father will take me to these games.

It already had two youngsters from town world champions in pelote basque. In French the tourist office gives some bit of history and a local hero on the game

a nice stop if only see when games are on.

Equipment: you can come as visitor to see it

Walk (a part of) the santiago de compostella trail

by Mique Updated Dec 14, 2007

Through this region there are 4 roads to Santiago de Compostella coming together. The rails and the religious buildings on the trail such as the abbey of La Sauve -Majeure and the abbey of St-Ferme are on the Unesco list. So if you feel like hiking a bit, this might be just your thing to do
