If you're driving to Uzeste through the forests of Les Landes, the last thing you expect to find is a pope. Yet this is the place where Clemens V, the pope who moved the papal court from Rome to Avignon in 1309, wanted to be buried.
His grave is located behind the main altar. Unfortunately it was heavily damaged during the wars of religion. The statue of the virgin Mary (13th century) behind the grave is in much better condition. This is where Bertrand de Got, the future pope, went to worship.
