Rochefort Things to Do

  • Souvenir Shop

A section of the complex is dedicated for souvenirs. Here you can purchase sea man equipments and instruments including sextants, Azimuths and Binoculars.

  • Renovated Corderie Royale

The building is very long to be able to take care of the lenght of the rope that has to be made. This is because, everything is manually made using man power. Although, there is a little mechanical imput in the production operations.

My good friend in Rocheforth a Captain in the French Gendames talk for several days about taking me to this resturant in La Rochele, at last we went in two separate cars. This is because I told him, if am not impressed, we'll part ways.

But it was nice. You can't come in except you have a reservation as patronage is too high.

Favorite Dish: I will try and remember the name, but it was basically an uncooked shell fish wish you take with lime.
The food came in courses and I enjoyed every bit of it.

Rochefort does not have a public transportation system. You either do a guided tour in a bus, or you rent a car. It is advisable to have an organized tour.

Maison du Transbordeur is at rue de Martrou 17620 Echila. It is very popular, but aside a coffee shop that operates right at the foot now, nothing much is happening there.

Unique Suggestions: If you must go, make sure that you have seen other places, then go there to relax at the coffee shop and enjoy the scenery.

Fun Alternatives: The Hermione is much prefered. See tips on Hermione.

Rochefort Off The Beaten Path

  • Forts

On the way to Ile d'Aix, you'll observe some forts that were constructed as lines of last defence for Rochefort which was then a major battle ship constuction town. Thus all navigable entrances to Rochefort were strategically fortified against enemy Gallons and war ships.

This is a rare church building in Rochefort's surburb... T he church is called Eglise romane (XII siecle). To reach Echillais, you must cross the La Charente either by the Pont Transbordeur if you belong to the past or make use of the new bridge if you belong to the present. The villagers are very proud of this 12th century church building and it...
