William the Conqueror set sail from Barfleur to demand his rights to the English thrown in the year 1066. A competitor took his rightful place and William - being duke of Normandie - went to England to set it straight. This lead to the Battle of Hastings in which William indeed became "the Conqueror". He took his place and then ruled over England and Normandie.

At the rock besides the left port head, a small church is built in the 18th century. The church is devoted to Saint Mary Magdalene and simple from the outside. In the dark interior, some fine wood sculptures can be seen, but the most interesting is the old village's cemetry, nicknamed the fishermen's cemetry.
In front of the church a monument commemorating all the victims of both worldwars is surrounded with large granates as decoration.

A day at Barfleur is a calm peaceful day enjoying the view of a colourful and pretty little harbour. IN less then an hour one slowly strawls from one port head to the other, including some stops to watch the details of some fishermen's ships or enjoy the silent incoming (or outgoing) tide. This one should enjoy, so both typical views of the Barfleur harbour are in your mind. One without the water, when the boats lay in the mud and one filled up to the kays walls.
