 | Cherbourg Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 11 | | Popular Restaurants | Other Restaurants Tips | All Tips (11) Well, we arrived in Cherbourg mid-afternoon and we were hungry. It was grey, drizzly and chilly, and we wanted some comfort food. Finding a car park just near our hotel, we decided to have lunch before we checked in, so perused the cafes/restaurants nearby. We opted for Le Caligny….not because it was the best looking option, but because it was the only one still serving lunch! As it wasn't very warm, we hoped to sit inside, but after a quick look found it too be very smoky, so we braved the elements and sat outside.
We all decided to eat the same thing - a Croque Madame, which is basically a toasted Ham & Gruyere cheese sandwich with a fried egg on top. It was served with a big serve of fries, and washed down with a fizzy Perrier. The service wasn't great, and the place didn't look the best, but the food was edible and it was convenient. We stayed in Cherbourg on a Sunday night and many of the restaurants were closed. After a look at our remaining options, we decided that Le Cotentin looked like a good choice. Le Cotentin is located across the road from the port, and was conveniently close to our hotel. It has a ground floor bar and restaurant area, but we decided to dine in the first floor restaurant which offered a nice view over the port. It is a modern, bright looking restaurant and service was friendly and fairly efficient.
It seemed appropriate to enjoy a small beer while we had a look at the menu. We all opted to select from a 3 course set menu, which offered very good value. To start, Chris & I both had the Seafood salad and Alex had the prosciutto and salad. For our main meal, Chris had a local specialty - the Marmite Cherbourgeoise, which is a type of thick fish soup, and it was very tasty. I had Steak and chips which was actually really good, and Alex had a meal with two types of fish that he said was too bland. For dessert I had a Crème Brulee, Chris had the Tiramisu and Alex had an unusual concoction involving bananas and caramel. We enjoyed a bottle of Loire Valley white wine with our meals. We had our best meal in Normandy at LA PIZZA CAFE CALIGNY in CHERBOURG. The speciality is fresh local seafood but for landlubbers like myself they do a nice range of pizza and pasta, all fairly cheap. The matron is friendly and welcoming. She doesn't speak English but was very accommodating with my attempts at speaking French. I even managed to explain a small oversight on our bill with no trouble for which she happily apolgised and corrected.
Pizza! Baked fresh with a very thin, crisp crust and served with a cold Kronenbourg. The service is really friendly and efficient. It is small, with ancient chair and situated above a shop.

Any restaurant by the sea or the road is relevent here. Firstly, I found the distinction between Moules Marienere and Moules Normandie to be the reverse in Frace than it is in England. In france, Moules NOrmandie is the one that is served with the garlic and white wine sauce and in ENgland it is Moules Marienere (lit. "mussels from the sea, I presume). I ordered the latter thinking I was getting the former and was disappointed. ALso we ate about 2:00 pm at a roadside restaurant and were promptly engulfed in rush hour traffic smog. Not pleasant. I also think that in france they have a half day on Mondays, which was why we were wondering around until after 12 looking for shops that were open. A very good idea - we should adopt it in this country Theme: LocalAddress: n/a

This is a real find if you are exploring the Cotentin Peninsula. The Landemer is a hotel and restaurant about 20 km south of Cherbourg (Urville-Nacqueville).It is a one star hotel, but what a location, what great prices and great food! It faces the sea and is right on the (G R 223). The staff make you feel welcome, the food is fantastic and authentic and the open view of the sea from the restaurant at sunset is "formidable"! We were taken there by the owner of Le Manoir de Dur Ecu, whom we did a home exchange with. The restaurant and hotel is about a five minute walk from the manoir. This frenchman knows great French Cuisine at very economical prices. There were no tourists there except us. What a treat! What a jewel of a find! What a great time we had!
Try the local seafood(crab, langoustines, scallops…,sea bass, red mullet, skate fish , …) fresh daily and end off with the cheese tray. A small and pleasant place, service was ok and quite quick despite being a third full.

The full-course dinner (apple wine:Calvados, a homard shrimp, an oyster, a flounder, a steak, sherbet, Camembert de Normandie, other things) of the Normandie food completed my appetite.

This restaurant was well priced on the fixed menu. It's all large windows so you can see the water and town. The food was excellent, delicious seafood soup, salad, entree and creme brulee for dessert! (click on pic for better view)
