about to drive across the Pont de Normandie by sue_stone In June/July 2006 we had a 9 day driving holiday in France. We caught a car ferry from Dover to Calais, drove down through Normandy, popped into Brittany and then caught the ferry back to Dover from Boulogne-sur-Mer. We chose to take our own car over, as the cost of the ferry and petrol was significantly cheaper than flying from London and hiring a car in France. I also feel a lot more comfortable travelling in our own car as opposed to a hire car. The only negative thing about driving our car in France is that it is a right hand drive car, and French cars are left hand drive, which means that tolls/tickets machines etc are on the wrong side of the car for the driver to operate…luckily I was able to assist in these duties from the passenger seat, but I do feel sorry for the solo traveller in these situations. Driving in France is great. The roads are good and the sign posting is excellent. You can hoon along on the wide tollways/freeways, or travel along pretty coastal roads, soaking up the atmosphere of the French countryside. Just remember which side of the road you have to drive on if you come over from the UK. When we drove into Honfleur, we travelled along the A29/E44 so we could drive over the fabulous Pont de Normandie - even the toll of 5 euro was worth it! Leave a Comment

Connecting la Basse Normandie and Haute Normandie over the sea, this large bridge is one of the most spectacular in France, inaugurated in 1995. You get a nice view of it from Honfleur 5 euro toll by car I took this bridge to go from Honfleur to Etretat, yeah nice trip ! Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

As you come in on the main road to Honfleur you'll come down a big tree-lined road. Once the buildings start you'll see a sign on the left that says 'Free Parking'..or Parking Gratuit or whatever it is in French! You have to go up a ramp to the parking spaces (it's near a doctor's surgery) and you do wonder if it's a legitimate car park...it is. Take this kind offer of free parking because once you get stuck in the queue to get into Honfleur you'll be there for hours. The car park is only about a 10 minute walk from town centre. Alternatively there are parking meters down this road, these are your second best option...but DON'T TAKE THE CAR INTO HONFLEUR..you have been warned! If the bridge is up you'll be there for hours. I am a girl who like a good bridge, and just 2km from Honfleur is one of the most stunning I have seen to date - the Pont de Normandie. This beautiful cable-stayed bridge was completed in January 1995, and at just over 2.1 kms long, was, for a few years, the longest bridge of its kind in the world. It crosses the River Seine, joining Honfleur and Le Havre. Its two towers soar to a height of 215 metres, and its strong cables create a web design, connecting to the arch of the bridge. There is a charge of 5 euro to drive across the bridge, but I think it was worth every cent. The photos I took were through the window of the moving car, so apologies for the quality! Leave a Comment

Honfleur is a pretty town and the nicest part in my opinion is the Vieux Bassin and surrounding streets. Vieux Bassin is a small harbour in the heart of the town. This is the place from where once ships sailed forth to discover new lands. These days it is filled with yachts and other fancy looking boats. Surrounding the harbour is quai Ste-Catherine and quai St-Etienne. These cobbled streets are lined with beautiful and colourful narrow houses, and are home to numerous restaurants which all have tables over-looking the water. Even if you don't dine at one of those restaurants, Vieux Bassin is a particularly magical place for a stroll in the evening, perhaps with an ice cream or just your camera. The Eglise Ste-Catherine is located just up the hill from Vieux Bassin, in place Ste-Catherine. The church is unusual as it is built from wood, not stone. The original stone church was destroyed in the Hundred Years' War, and was re-built using wood during the 15th & 16th centuries. The building work was mainly done by shipbuilders, and many people think that the church looks a bit like an up-turned boat It is said that wood was used to re-construct the church as they wanted to save the stone for use in strengthening the fortifications that once surrounded the old town of Honfleur. The church is open daily 9:00–18:30 in summer, off-season 9:00–12:00 & 14:00–18:00 (except during services). Admission is free. Unfortunately when we got to the church it was after 6pm, so had to make do with a good look around the outside. Leave a Comment Address: Place Ste-Catherine, Honfleur

Clocher Ste-Catherine by sue_stone The Clocher Ste-Catherine is the bell tower for the Eglise Ste-Catherine. It is located across the square from the church, and is also built from wood. The bell tower had to be built separately from the church for safety reasons - if the tall tower was hit by lightening it may mean that the whole church would burn down. There was also some structural concerns…..would the weight of the tower and the constant vibrations of the ringing bells cause problems with the churches wooden walls and roof. At the bottom of the tower is where the bell-ringer used to live, and these days it houses a small museum, which costs a few euro to visit. The tower is open daily 9:00–18:30 in summer, off-season 9:00–12:00 & 14:00–18:00. Leave a Comment Address: Place Ste-Catherine, Honfleur

Honfleur's Picturesque Port by ExGuyParis Honfleur is a charming town on the Normandy coast-- a two hour drive from Paris (200 km, or 120 miles). It is clearly a town made for tourists, with art galleries, souvenir shops, and many restaurants. Begin your visit with a stroll around the port, pictured here. Leave a Comment

Tourists Discover Honfleur by ExGuyParis One Sunday in July, we decided to drive to Honfleur. The trip that should have taken less than two hours took over three, because just about every other Parisian also decided it was a good day to visit Honfleur! At each toll booth on A13, there was a 10 km or so backup. We got off the highway and worked our way via back roads. Finally we reached Honfleur. The huge parking area by the water was almost full. Still, it was a glorious day, and watching other tourists can be fun. Here, tourists take over rue de la Ville. Leave a Comment
