    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We arrived in Houlgate and took a pleasant walk along the ocean. By the time we got into town, it was lunch time and we were hungry. None of the beach restaurants had been open since it was definitely out of season. However, downtown was full of busy shoppers and the Restaurant des Halles across from the market (les Halles) was open and welcoming.

We checked the menu and discovered we could each get something we liked at a price we could afford so entered and joined the townspeople for nice fresh produce, fish and meat. It was cheery and warm inside and the waiter had a grand time trying to practice his English and helping us with our French.

Favorite Dish: Here's my Journal description of the meal.

We both got a terrific hot goat cheese salad. Ed got trout and I got duck as entrées and both were good. He got an apple sorbet with Calvados dessert, and I had a chocolate mousse in crème Anglais. The waiter was exceptionally friendly, perhaps because there were no other tourists about . . .
