Grand road leading to the steps of the church

The road leading up to Notre Dame is very special, it looks stunning and is so clean and very green. Its almost like a little boulevard!

It was built in this way so that when there is a religious festival on, there is plenty of room for a procession from the village to the steps of the church.

    Gardens and Accommodations

The gardens here at the side of Notre Dame de Montligeon are very French in their design and feel.

The beautiful buildings surrounding the gardens are now used as a hotel and a guesthouse to cater for the numerous visitors that make their pilgrimage here.

    Inside the Basillica

by kentishgirl Updated Jan 3, 2005
    Interior

Unusually in Gothic style there are mosaics inside the church, apparantly this was done to try and steer away from the Gothic feel of the church.

There is 1300 sq metres of mosaic flooring and in the transepts of the altar are mosaics of the Sacred Heart and one of Saint Joseph.

    Stained Glass

The Great Rose Window of The Virgin Mary

The stained glass of the church tells many stories. This is the main Rose window, the window which allows most of the light to the inside of the building.
This window on the plan is called the "The Great Rose Window Of the Virgin Mary".

The picture on this particular window show the Virgin and Child and the ancestors of Christ.

    Gothic Spires

    Sanctuaire Notre Dame de Montligeon

The neo Gothic spires of this church stand at approximatley 60 metres in height.

As will all Gothic Spires, they look so delicate! i wonder just how they manage to stay up there!

All around the exterior of the church you will see statues of Saints - 32 in total - one of them being Francis of Assisi.

    The Nativity

    Nativity

As we were here in December, just after Christmas the beautiful Nativity set was still in the church located down by the alter and surrounded by numerous candles, I would have loved to attend a mass here - I imagine it would have been spectacular.

    Sanctuaire Notre Dame de Montligeon

by kentishgirl Updated Jan 3, 2005
    Detail on the Facade

This really is a beautiful church set in Normandie's countryside.

The building was started in 1896 and finished around 1911. The architect was Monseuir Tessier and the building is made from Limestone - bought from the Poitou region of France.

As the area is damp, the limestone now has a sheen from it...making it look almost glossy!

The Basillica stands up on a terrace with steps that rise to the front door and gardens to the side.

    The Shrine

by kentishgirl Updated Jan 3, 2005
Statue of Our Lady of Montligeon

As you walk down through the church you will come to the chancel, set on the high alter stands the beautiful statue of Our Lady of Montligeon, the statue is quite big and very impressive, you can stand up and take a good look at it. It is built of Carrara Marble and depicts the Virgin Mary showing the baby Jesus to two women who kneel at her feet.

Unfortunatley my photograph isnt great because it was a dark December day and the church was not lit inside!

    Sanctuaire Notre Dame De Montligeon

Sanctuaire Notre Dame de Montligeon is located in the small village of La Chapelle Montligeon, the village has a population of approximatley 800 people...you can imagine how small it is!
The village is located in the Commune Du Parc Du Perche, a national park forest region in Basse Normandie.

The surrounding area is stunning, and the church is so high and stunning...it can be seen for miles around as you approach on the small country lanes.

    Holy Water Font

The Holy Water Font inside the front door of this church was most unusual - as you can see from the photograph its in the shape of a shell.
