When we stop at a town or village we always take a walk and visit the church. It tells you a lot about the town and we often meet pleasant people and find interesting art hidden in corners of churches. We've been treated to organ recitals, concerts, rehearsals and even quite a few weddings. So far we've only been to one funeral and oddly, the family thanked us for coming. Perhaps a couple foreigners lent dignity and importance.

The point is that if you are looking for "authentic" experiences, you are apt to find them in churches.
