Beaune is located 44km south of Dijon and hence is an easy day trip from here, by train, bus or car.
If you drive to Beaune, like we did, you will find plenty of free parking outside the town walls.
Just drive around the ring road circling the town and look for a spot, or pop into one of the parking areas.
It is then only a short walk into the centre of town.
It is best to explore the town on foot. All the sights are in close proximity. If you arrive by car, there are several free parking areas at the "entrances" to the town. If you enter via St Nicholas Gate, you will follow Liberty Street and arrive at the centre where most of the sights, and a tourist info office is.
It is at a very busy intersection in autoroutes of France with the A6 from Paris and the A31 from Metz (Lorraine) and A36 Mulhouse (Alsace). Very easy to get to on the road, for visitors the best is the viamichelin route planner at http://www.viamichelin.co.uk/ .
For parking Chanceliers or St Jean south of the city are best for quick getaways to wine country. Then you have the trains, oh yes those trains..from Paris Gare de Lyon many trains per day direction Dijon or Chalon sur Saône, the Beaune train station is at ave 8 du septembre just outside the inner city centre; regional TER with most schedules is at http://www.ter-sncf.com/regions/bourgogne/fr/default.aspx .
For all types of transport in Burgundy the new centralised site is Mobigo at http://www.mobigo-bourgogne.com/ including Beaune where for example it says 21 mins on bus No 74 from the train station to the hospice de Beaune
I come here by car very easy from Versailles or Paris, A6 sortie or exit 24 Centre. Here is a pdf file with parking info, my favorite to stay in the city is at Republique
however great train lines too
TER trains for Burgundy or Bourgogne
also service by the TGV fast trains. The train station is at Avenue 8 Septembre just outside the city beltway and connects with Paris gare de Lyon.
mobigo is the agglo area bus service Vingt
you also have other forms of travel and some other areas nearby above link
Also Transco, for nearby communities by bus
While we contemplated renting a car or hooking up with a tour company, we were very glad we chose to rent a car. Driving in Burgundy is easy and the ability to visit little out of the way spots spontaneously made for a great experience.
We rented from Europcar and were pleased with the car (Ford Focus) and the price. We were the couple who wanted the car with the automatic transmission and I think we got the only one in Beaune. :-) It was a quick walk over to pick up the car from our hotel in Beaune. The staff at the rental agency were very friendly and despite a little language barrier, we were out and on our way in no time.
My one recommendation is to book and maybe even prepay for your car online. We saved a bit by doing so and avoided hassles at pickup time.
It's an easy trip from Paris to Beaune via train. We departed from Paris - Bercy on a regular TER train and three hours later we arrived at Gare de Beaune. Walking from the station to a central Beaune hotel should then take about 15 minutes.
Total price for 1st Classe seating was Euro 71 each.
