Patio of Restaurant de la Vieille Tour

A young man from Amsterdam and his girlfriend are running this restaurant adjacent to the city gate / tower. We wandered in by default; it's the first restaurant you see past the gate. We were so glad we did. There wasn't a lot of menu choice but the food was excellent and the service very friendly. The young man's mother owned the restaurant and a hotel and found it a bit too much to handle so turned the restaurant over to her son. It was a wise decision!

One caveat: The owner thought we were British and he was very friendly. When he gave us a local "football" score, we told him we weren't from the UK but from America. He stayed and chatted with us but it quickly became apparent he does not like Americans and he finally made us very uncomfortable. So . . . the food is great. If you happen to be from the USA, just tell him you are British and you'll be fine.

Favorite Dish: Here's my journal entry for the meal that day:

We were ushered to our seats by a pleasant young man who asked if we preferred to speak English or French and we said it didn’t make a lot of difference, but he continued in impeccable English. He explained the plat du jour, a veal lightly sauteed and sauced. We ordered crudités to start and got a plate of sliced cucumber, excellent fresh tomatoes (in May!) beets, carrots and alfalfa sprouts with a zippy vinaigrette. The promised plat of veal arrived cooked to perfection and accompanied by a marvelous sausage and a huge serving of lentils cooked with bacon, carrots and onion. This was accompanied by a delicious local bread. For dessert Ed got the caramelized fig in red wine sauce and I got a ginger tart with vanilla ice cream. The tart was covered in chunks of candied ginger . . . heavenly. It was a marvelous eating experience . . . highly recommended.
