400 years ago, Noyers was mostly known for its strengthened castle, built between the Xth and the XIIth century. The castle - of a triangular shape - was built on the slopes and the top of a timbered spur, bordered east and west by the Serein.

In 1599, Henri IV, king of France ordered the destruction of this fortified town, the most important of Burgundy (this ahppend after the Noyers' family got involved in the religious wars).
The vestiges were dispersed some time before the revolution, on the order of the Duke of Luynes, last lord of Noyers.

Nowadays, you can still guess the constructions undertaken at the XII century's end by Hugues de Noyers and the association for the Old Castle of Noyers tries to revive the forgotten inheritance and to partly restore the castle.

From the former 23 towers (during the middle age), 19 remain along with parts of the fortifications' walls along the Serein.

One tower can be visited and contains a dispatch of medieval armours : la tour de défense des remparts (the fortifications' tower - 7 bis rue des terreaux - near the porte peinte) : for the visits' schedule, ask the tourist office (22 place de l'hotel de ville, facing the townhouse).

The village also still has 3 of its former access doors : the porte de Tonnerre, the porte peinte and the porte vennoise.

Noyers sur Serein is classified 'un des plus beaux villages de France' (one of France's prettiest villages).
The old town is characteristic with its well preserved (and/or sometimes restored) medieval (some date back from the 15th century) timbered houses.

The place is especially pleasant to visit on sundays when cars are banned from the center of the village.
