By the time this little church was built, the craft (art) of sculpture had existed for over 100 years and there were craftsmen and apprentices in considerable numbers in Southern France. They were most attentive to the dictates of the Cluniacs, who must have "protected" St.-Jean and referred such workers to them. The master here was able to work easily in the round and produced capitals that could sit on rounded columns. His associates used the cuboid blocks working more simply in three dimensions, by proceding in from the edges and where needed, he finished them. These are charming figures and precise designs and are worth some admiration.

If you are interested in the evolution of the Gothic, then take a few moments to look at the little church of St-Jean. It is early 13C and the Gothic pointed arches have occupied the arcades of the little basilican plan of the nave while there is a groined vaulted choir. The arches are supported by sturdy pillars to which are applied segment round columns with carved capitals. As in Italy at this period, it has a wooden roof (probably for lack of funds). However the front door is still sturdily Romanesque as is the bell-tower. The carved capitals deserve a second Tip.
