Having seen the statue of the Marshal, it time to follow the encircling moat and note the decoration of its retaining wall, then cross back to the outbuildings which are extensive and well built. Those on the right as you leave, are the stables. Particularly note the fine carved stone horse head over the main door.

The North side of the Chateau commands the best view, enhanced by a small lake in front of a magnificent staircase and Terrace. Around back on the South side beyond the Chapel stands the statue of President Mac-Mahon. (The year 2008 is his 200th birthday).

Since we were not allowed entry into the chateau we at least walked around it to see its imressive grounds. They certainly are the equal of almost any chateau on the Loire and it probably was as impressive as Fontainebleau when Mme. de Sevigne visited. (It is the best chateau we have seen in Burgundy). The entry by a stone bridge over the moat approaches a tall-arched door tall enough to accommodate horses (and coaches). The South face with its chapel and turrets was very appealing and the North face with its fine stairs and terrace projecting into the little lake was a surprise and requires further study.
