In June/July 2006 we had a 9 day driving holiday in France. We caught a car ferry from Dover to Calais, drove down through Normandy, popped into Brittany and then caught the ferry back to Dover from Boulogne-sur-Mer.

We chose to take our own car over, as the cost of the ferry and petrol was significantly cheaper than flying from London and hiring a car in France. I also feel a lot more comfortable travelling in our own car as opposed to a hire car.

The only negative thing about driving our car in France is that it is a right hand drive car, and French cars are left hand drive, which means that tolls/tickets machines etc are on the wrong side of the car for the driver to operate…luckily I was able to assist in these duties from the passenger seat, but I do feel sorry for the solo traveller in these situations.

Driving in France is great. The roads are good and the sign posting is excellent. You can hoon along on the wide tollways/freeways, or travel along pretty coastal roads, soaking up the atmosphere of the French countryside. Just remember which side of the road you have to drive on if you come over from the UK.

    Walk along the coast
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ok, so there isn't a great deal to do in Dinard besides relax on, or by the beach. So in between the relaxing and ice cream eating, make sure you take a walk along the beautiful coast line.

We took a leisurely walk along the path that starts from the west end of the Grande Plage (main beach) and follows the coast around to Plage de St-Enogat. It is a lovely walk, with impressive house up on the cliff to peer at, and the blue water beside you, along with rock pools to peer down into and fish to spot. Oh, and check out the view across the bay to St-Malo.

You can actually take a walk along the coast path from Plage du Prieure (1km south of the main beach) to Plage de St-Enogat (1km west of the main beach).

And just think, the more walking you do, the more ice cream you can justify!

    Beaches
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dinard's main draw card is its beaches. The main beach is called Plage de l'Ecluse or Grande Plage, which sits in a small bay surrounded by grand old mansions and impressive holiday rentals.

I can imagine that the beach gets pretty crowded in peak season, but when we were there mid-week in June there was plenty of room on the sand to relax….especially as the tide went out and the beach got bigger and bigger and bigger!!

There are some nice old changing sheds along the beach and apparently Picasso used the beach as a setting for several paintings in the 1920's!

If you walk west, around the headland from Plage de l'Ecluse, after about 1km you will come another beach, Plage de St-Enogat. Or, around 1km south you will find Plage du Prieure, which is a good place to escape some of the summer crowds.

    Barrage de la Rance
This 750m beidge over the Rance estuary carries between St.Malo and Dinard. Using generates electricity by harnessing the lower estuary's extraordinarily high tidal range.
