The Museum

Favorite thing: Dol is a possible place to stay if you are visiting Mont St.-Michel. There are simple hotels to lodge at and places to eat. The town has a Promenade with a view of the Marais and there are two fine Off the Beaten Path places (See Tips). There is also a local museum which may be fitted in. It looks a little like a tourist trap from the outside but is cited in the Guide Michelin. (We did not have time to go in, since we had reservations at a place just east of the Mont).

Hiring videos the French way

Favorite thing: We found this video hire self-serve kiosk just across the road from our B & B, outside the laundromat. It's the first (and only) time we saw one in France - seems to be something you'd find in a small town without a video shop - put credit card in, choose video, and it comes out of the machine.

Fondest memory: I rather enjoyed the town centre of Dol, with many quaint shops and buildings, and, at the end of May, it didn't feel too touristy at all, just a nice town to explore on foot.

A: Dol has a free "aire de service" for camping-cars: http://www.i-campingcar.fr/liste.php?dpt=35. You can park there and ride the train.

A Different Cathedral and Local History Too

We have visited Dol twice (in the same year). It is a small town (pop.5K) not on the coast. It would be off the beaten path except that it is a good place to stop enroute to Mont St. Michel (20 miles...

Quaint Dol near Mont St Michel

Lucie, a contact from another website, when she heard we would be visiting Mont St Michel, recommended Dol to us as a good town to stop overnight in, rather than closer Pontorson, which is smaller,......
