The Menhir of Champ-Dolent stands 2 km South of Dol and should not be missed if you are in the area. It is by far the tallest one we have ever seen standing, 30 ft (9 m) high! It is situated : go S. on D795 about 2 km. It is just after (about 500m) after the D4 comes off on your left. It is in a field between these 2 roads. I think there are signposts.

This town lies 8 km due North of Dol de Bretagne via the D155. It is on the coast of the Bay of St.-Michel and is a beach resort with a couple of Logis de France lodgings and restaurants. We regret that we did not go there, since we were unaware of this Tip. While we were having our picnic only 2 km away and were looking out over the receded water-free marsh, we saw a good sized amphibious vehicle roll by about 0.5 km away. We did not know what it was but took a picture. Much later we discovered that this is "La Sirene de la Baie" or "The Mermaid". It offers a 1-1/2 hr cruise/drive around the oyster and mussel farms and various sights along the bay from Le Vivier. During the trip raw seafood delicacies are offered and there is also a lunch cruise. It departs every 2 hours. Just down our alley, but we did not know!

The Dol Mound is 200 feet high and is about 4 km from Dol de Bretagne. The narrow road is safe and will allow a car to pass in either direction. You easily ascend to the end of the road near a monument (Notre Dame de l'Esperance) which is a bell-tower for the little church of Mont Dol nearby. The tower was originally a semaphor (built in 1802). A little climb leads to a rocky plateau with spurs projecting in various angles. There are fine views and the footing is easy. On good days Mont St.-Michel can be seen east as well as many places west. All around are the Dol marshes (marais) that have been recently much reclaimed and have productive farms. A farmstead nearby has an old windmill from the first attempts to use alternate energy long ago. To the north toward Vivier-sur-Mer and the coast there is more marsh. The rocks on the Mont give mythical evidences of the Great Battle between St.-Michel and Satan (See Our Customs Tip under Bretagne) which requires a diagram and imagination to discover (the sites are not marked;try it).
