At the moment -2004 - people are doing
archeological research on the domain of
the zoo. It seems that there are traces of a
gallo roman villa here.
So the presence of humans go back a long time.
But the first time the name 'Branf?r?' pops up
is in 1427.
We have to wait untill 1848 untill the present
castle was build. That is rather small.
It has always been used as the countryside
residence. Keep in mind that travelling didn't go that fast at the time.
The thing is , you can only see it
when you visit the zoo.

Lemurs , they are not that common in zoos.
At least not the species seen here.
Here they share the large garden with
mara's , wallaby's and cranes , ...
I just walked in on them when they where
taking there afternoon sun-bath.
Since lemurs are endemic on madagascar,
(that means , madagascar is the only island
in the world where u can find them)...
and madagascar is treathened by
overpopulation , there habitat is endagered.
That means these animals are
a highly endagered species.

As they live in semi-freedom it might take
some time to find them... This is a male
Black lemur (lemur macaco).
How do I know its a male?
Well females are reddish brown. They
normally live in the forrest in the
north of madgascar.
I'll let this lemur say goodbey to you.
If you want to see some more about the zoo
take a look at the travellogues below.

Since I recently have been in Rome I forgot
that a fountain also could look like this.
There are two fo them. This fountain is called
'fantaine saint marie'.
This one is the most simple design of the
two.
It is rather unnoted. 1787 is the year this one
was taken in service. and it already got
protected in 1928.
Just to let you know how much distance
there is between this little village and
Rome...the Roman fountains , were constructed
hunderd years before this primitive one
was constructed.
I just wondered where the water came from?
At first I would called it a source.
The water is not potable.

Evere wednesday during the touristic season ,
from 15 june till 15 september there is a
little market behind the church.
(yes there is only one church).
It starts at 5 in the afternoon and ends at 9.
It isn't big but attracts quit some people.
There are a few farmers selling products ,
and some craftman...
We bought some saucissons de campagnarde.
They are made of porc and you can have them
covered with spices or pepper or...
We also bought some apple wine ,
that one is still waiting for us to get opened.
And I had to try these great local sweets. lol

Le Guerno is a very little village.
By very little I mean it is not larger then a couple
of houses and a church in the middle.
Their official website sais the village got
582 habitants.
The village center is protected - it owns the title
-Bourg du Patrimoine Rural de Bretagne-.
Meaning it is a protected location and it has to
stay that way as much as possible.
It is a tipical Brittany village where a fishers
community used to live.
That and the peace and quitness makes it
for me an ideal holiday spot.
Just a few kilometers away people are
stacked up in appartments , just to see the sea.

This little fellow has the whole place
to jump around. When your silent and
peaceful you might even get really close to
them
Even in the wild they are known to be inquisitive
and once in a while sniff around
some backpackers stuff..
It is a bennett's wallaby.
He originally lives in Tasmania , australia.
Other then size they aren't much different from
kangaroos. They life in scrubby areas and
eucalypt forests and eat grass and other plants.
That is why they are such a succefull species ,
they adjust quit good to almost every habitat.
Their youngster stays for 9 months in the pouch.
And breeding seems to be very
succesfull at Branféré.

Branféré is a castle near the village center of
'Le guerno'.
It is a large green parc that has little to do
with a traditional zoo. All animals live
in semi-freedom.
That is also the reason why I went back.
It has conquered a place close to my heart.
That doesn't mean I don't have some questions
on animal welfare or ...For instance , how
do they regulate the births of the free animals?
Or another thing , they let the visitors feed the
animals. They sell pure unsalted or sugared
pop-corn for that. I do have questions on that.
But the intentions of the owners are good and
I really vallue that.
It is a real feel-good experience.
