This is what remains of the Church of the Madeleine (see photo).

This ruins are of the old lepers church that became in 1129AD the abbey of Marmoutier. In 1343AD, the diplomats in the court of Philippe VI de Valois and Edward III of England signed the famous truce of Malestroit ( that gave way to the retiring of the English troops from Brittany).

The chapel was disassociate from the religious order in 1870. The beautiful stained glasses telling us the story of Saint Madeleine, were purchase by Émile Zola ,and sold later to an American museum. The wall clock fortified is the oldest in the département or state.

The chapel went thru a terrible period in the bloody battle of a group of Chouans (rebels breton who fought the French revolution) inside its walls. This group of Chouans were massacre inside. The violent combats are shown in the paintings of Alexandre Bloch.
