This panel is maybe my fondest memory of Rennes. Imagine how a language- and Europe-lover as I am can feel while reading about LA MAISON DES LANGUES - L'esprit international" ("THE HOUSE OF LANGUAGES - The international spirit"). Even more European and keen at learning languages! Two people are meeting and the motto is Notre avenir passe par les langues ("Our future goes through languages"), a universal truth. But what makes this advertising poster even more international is the phrase "Good morning" written in many languages: Breton, Spanish, Slovene, French, Finnish, Portuguese, Dutch, Czech, an Asian language (Chinese, Japanese, Korean...), Romansch, Greek, Italian (wrong spelling, though! We write buongiorno in one word), Danish Norwegian and Swedish, English, German, Russian, Arab (?). If you see any mistakes in this list, please correct me. So, this is a great message about the importance of learning languages and of being cosmopolites. Leave a Comment

Getting into a church, any church, can make you feel more peaceful... Church of Notre-Dame (Saint Melaine) is such a place, as Thabor park, which has one of the most beautiful gardens in the whole France. Leave a Comment

The Jardin du Thabor is the park of Rennes, the lungs of the town. However, don't think it is just a park with trees and some benches. No, no, no! This is a religious place, not because it belonged to the Benedictines who gave it the name of the byblical Palestinian mount, but because it's so peaceful, a kind of little heaven. It's also an artistic garden: here and there you will see beautiful white statues of Goddesses and other characters. And what about the wonderful flowers that decorate the garden? No words. This is the place you have to visit in Rennes. Leave a Comment

The river that flows through Rennes is the Vilaine, which also gives its name to the département of Ille-et-Vilaine, where the Breton capital city is located. "Vilain" means "ugly, awful" or "bad" in French, but this doesn't seem to be the case of the Rennais river. Leave a Comment
