The most scenic way to go from Plougonvelin to Saint Mathieu is to follow the coastal path (chemin côtier). This path wanders along the coast from the "technopole" in Plouzané all the way to Saint Mathieu.
From Le Conquet or Plougonvelin, you can very easily cycle to Saint Mathieu. However, be warned, the roads are steep so be prepared for hard work. But the scenery on the way is definitely worth it.
The more difficult but more scenic of the two routes is the one from Le Conquet.
Favorite thing: The path to the lighthouse has been recently redone. It used to be a small earth path that could get quite muddy. They have now restored the wall that used to enclose the old abbey's gardens and generally improved the area using local granite stone.
Favorite thing: Like everywhere else in Brittany, Saint Mathieu can surprise you with the most stunning sunsets, where the sea and sky light up. From deep blue to brilliant red, each day has it own hue.
Favorite thing: Saint Mathieu is at the tip of the main land mass. It is first to receive the brunt of any storm and this is where the oceanic swell starts breaking before entering the bay of Brest. If you want to see the ocean in its primeval form, this is the place to go to. A winter storm here is fascinating and frightening.
