The Gothic cathédrale de Saint-Tugdual was built between the 13th and the 15th century. It hosts a 19th-century reproduction of the funerary monument of Saint-Yves, originary from Tréguier and patron saint of lawyers and notaries. Although many pilgrims came to his tomb, the church is dedicated to Saint-Tugdual.
Next to the cathedral lies a beautiful cloister, that I'll show you later.

This cathedral is considere one of the most beautiful in Brittany and at the same time as very special because of its many styles of Architecture..
Then there is the CLO?TRE (15th century) WITH ITS 46 arches.
From there you can admire the 3 towers of the Cathedral, so high and mighty!
Although all 3 towers are wonderful: they all differ in style, one is Romanesque, modest in circumference and square, the one in the middle, which is a little higher, has a openwork balustrade high up, while the third one, which is from the 15th Century has an immense spire that dates from the 18th Century and that dominates the city with its height of 63 mtrs.

It is in this strong, picturesque building / house of GRANITE that the famous writer ERNEST RENAN was corn in 1823. (He died in 1892).
His father was an ocean-going captain,
Ernest was a brilliant student and loved writing from the very start of his life, so to say!
It is wonderful to visit this house / museum and feel the atmosphere of the past.
He was a "language freak" , as I myself am...he too studied Greek and Latin and many other languages!
Visiting you can also see a video film about his life, you can buy books there and there is a fine garden for when your feet are killing you!
Do enjoy this visit.

This is the fief of St. Yves. The Parish church used to be the CHAPEL for the Mansion de KERMARTIN, which has been rebuilt and changed several times. Apart from the Tower Type Lannionais that was built at the beginning of the 19th Century, the church dates back to the 14th and 15th Century.
MINIHY is the area of the mansions.
Unfortunately the Mansion de Kermartin doesn't exist anymore (it was the place where Yves was born and where he died.)
Bur the Mansions de MEZOBRAN, SAINT-RENAUD, KERNABAT, KERMIN, KERPUNZ are still there.
MINIHY means: little hiding place.
It has nice boulevards along the rivers Le Jaudy and Le Guindy.
In the next TIP I shall tell you a bit more about this area, OK ?

In the Clo?tre you will see the tomb of St.-YVES, the patron-saint of Tr?guier..
St-Yves de KERMARTIN was buried here and day after day pilgrims come to visit his tomb and to touch it, while kneeling and praying there.
We can easily say that he is the most famous and beloved SAINT of the Breton people!

For the largest part this Cathedral, the very heart of the City, dates back from the 14th and 15th Centuries.
Only the tower of Hastings is a part of the first cathedral in the Romanesque style.
When you enter this Cathedral, this wonderrful Gothic building, you can choose one of the 3 portals there are.
When you take the southern one, located under the 60 mts. high spire, you will see this beautiful stained-glass window with it colourful and flamboyant a real eye-catcher.
In the Cathedral are many splendid and special things to admire and this Cathedral is very worthy of your visit because you will discover the CLO?TRE...a real surprise.
You enter the church and will find a door at your right side, near the altar and going through this door you will hear the shuffling feet of the monks that have lived and walked here, while praying and studying.......for venturies....so be quiet and listen....

LE CLO?TRE.
There are 3 distinct parts dating from different periods:
the remains of the Romanesque Cathedral: HASTING'S TOWER;
the Gothic nave and choir;
the Bell Tower, the Duke's Chapel and the Cloister are in the Decorated Style.
Now I could fill this box with more than 2047 characters but that would be a bit much of a good thing.
S/he who wants to know more architectural specialities of the Cathedral, please email me: eden_teuling@VirtualTourist.com

Tréguier is a quiet Breton village near Guingamp. The most worth visiting thing to visit is... a church, of course! It's the cathédrale de Saint-Tugdual, one of the best Gothic churches in the region....
