    Shopping in Vannes

by gwened Written Oct 18, 2014

Its a shopping thread but also think that the shopping is part of the tradition here. For a loong time the folks came into specialised stores in city center and that is still going on, but the modern times and family needs push to have huge hypermarket in the outskirst of cities even in France.

Here it is measure to be a hypermarket or hypermarché if has more than 2 500 m2 of space. This is about 26 900 sq feet. This is all out of the supermarket trend started in USA in the 1930's and extended to hypermarket in the 1960's. The first one in France was South of Paris in 1963 Under the carrefour banner. The biggest is by Portet in Toulouse with over 25 000 m2! open in 1972. Today E Leclerc has the most market share of them in France with about 33% of markets and second in sales.

98% of French families shop in hyper or super markets today. The trend is totally change. If most think we go to small mom and pop stores it is not true anymore. The mom and pop stores that remain are specialies selling end of the line products in competition with the city center or downtown markets. For the rest, the hypermarket is in.

The ones we go are E Leclerc or Carrefour, and sometimes Giant Casino. The E Leclerc in Ploeren just outside city limits of Vannes is huge. IT has an underground covered parking very nice, and plenty of outside parking. Inside you have a cultural center with books electronics apart and great travel Library. Then you have many stores and restaurants including a Flunch cafeteria. Outside you have a full gas station and self cleaning car service and plenty of other businesses surrounding it including a cinema.

open Monday to Thursdays from 8h30 to 20h ; Fridays and Saturdays is open until 20h30; and special opening Sundays and extra hours accoriding to the holidays. Some holidays it is open too.

I was there today again and took some additional pictures to those in shopping thread. It is near the main nationale 165 going from Nantes to Brest for free. Exit on D779e direction Grand Champ on traffic circle you will see it on your right. By public transport the bus network of Vannes, KICEO reaches here with line 5 (stop Laroisseau) stopping just across the shopping center.

entrance from main hall to Leclerc store inside leclerc the cash registers check out lanes electronic shopping, totals are added as you go! underground parking on way out and in goodies inside Leclerc chocolates section

market days or jour du marché

by gwened Written Apr 5, 2014

I believe that France would not be so great if it weren't for its wonderful market days, or jours du marché.

The market is a place conducive to exchanges and conviviality, strong vector linking social and economic vitality. Les halles in sumptuous architecture , the Streets full of stands from regional and national products offering a multitude of products. With the seasons the organizers will accompany these festive moments by nightly entertainment in summer at the time of the days off from work or your vacation or the occasion of the Christmas markets.

The Morbihan and especially Vannes with its typical markets will unveil its products to the smells of fresh strawberries of Plougastel, and honey, jellies, and ciders from local producers offering their fruit and vegetables. medieval markets will make you go back in time. Find the days of markets of Vannes, Lorient, Pontivy and other towns and villages of Morbihan

at Vannes, we have many such as
Halles des Lices ,every day from 8h00-13h30 except Mondays.
Place de la Poissonnerie ,Tuesdays 7h00-13h00
Halle aux poissons ,Place des LIces, Tuesdays 8h00-13h30
marché alimentaire de Ménimur at the shopping center or centre commercial on Tuesdays 8h00-13h30

The best ones is on Tuesdays/Saturdays morning from 8h to 13h30 and surrounding Streets of the Place du poids Public, a huge food market with fruits, vegetables, jellies, honeys, cheeses, and you have the fish , meat, and bakeries bio and normal , as well as NIcolas wines all open. In addition the great bars and restos around it, by noon time for lunch is tops.

Ideal for a family visiting and having cooking facilities or picnic in the wonderful parks or beaches where it is allowed. See my other entry in the Shopping thread on my page.

from pl de la Rpublique to the square the rue le Hellec going to pl du poids public the place du poids public and market market day pl du poids public normal day at place du poids public

    Catholic Breton fervor

by gwened Written Aug 4, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Catholics are a strong tradition here, many chapels, churches, crosses, and minor to huge monuments attest to this,A history of fighting to the Republic for the Catholic and Royal of Brittany and an assimilation still going on with Breton language coming up in schools and huge numbers of kids taken it, even if privately spoken.

This is the Diocese of Vannes, from where the many churches and parishes are directed. It can be visit with appointment ,and has a nice inner courtyard, and nice views over the canal and harbor below its location at rue monsigneur Triehoui.

The architecture is nice, with inscriptions on the front door. The building also houses youth and students from the world over, so inquiry here in English and has nice pictures.

singing and troubadeurs in the Streets

by gwened Written May 6, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Enough times walking in central Vannes, and there is always folks performing or singing or playing music in the street of the old city center.

Its a magical moment, I just sit and watch or listen these folks, of course very nice no haggling no problems, just plain folks enjoying themselves. Hopefully you will tip them, they deserve it, very nice and it gives an aura of troubadeurs of old

off pl Henri IV in old city center a further shot on pl henri IV singing and playing
