Paddle boat – Vendée’s largest lake.

The quay to anchor our paddle boat.

We enjoyed our paddling tour on the river Vie. We had to duck a few times to avoid some branches, but that was fun to. Once we returned toward our starting point we also had a good view at the Chateau d’Apremont seen from the river. At some point we could even see a glimpse of the tower of the St Martins Church. Arriving near the bridge Barrage d’Apremont we kept on paddling, making an u turn to the quay to anchor our paddle boat. We stepped out of the boat and handed over our safety vests and walked our way up to the Bord du Lac and to our surprise we saw a huge lake.

This is right where the river goes through La Chapelle-Palluau before entering this Vendée's largest lake just a few kilometers east of Mache. The lake was formed by damming the river Vie at Apremont and this vast stretch of water is both recreational with fishing, walking, boating and swimming from the beach at Apremont and as an important habitat for both flora and fauna. The lake also acts as a fresh water reservoir supplying drinking water to a large part of North West Vendée. So our conclusion of Apremont is that it is an unique spot in the Vendée with a beautiful castle, picturesque village centre, the amazing St Martins Church and finally the touristic lake nearby. Great location!

    Paddle boat – Safety first.

    Paddle boat fun!

Are you looking for an activity where you can sightsee, relax, and get a good workout? Rent a paddle boat and glide across the shores of the river Vie. We were warned in advance that paddling presents some special dangers that every participant in the sport should be aware of. These include; entrapments, broaches, strainers and low-head dams or trees. The most obvious threat to life on the water is drowning. Wearing a life jacket prevents this in the calm water of this particular river.

As being a parent I had great fun in inviting my kids to paddle the river. For Sam (the youngest) it was a challenge to reach the pedals, but we all really enjoyed our time together on the water. The kids got the opportunity to steer us around too, so it was great fun at minimal cost, a controlled environment, with the safety boat always nearby. Not that the boats could ever sink, because they are made like a giant float and are virtually unsinkable. They even look like fun, before you step aboard. Keep in mind that these boats are built for cruising, not racing. They quietened down pretty quick, once they got going. We passed a lot of other paddling boats there always seem to be kids, adults, lovers and tourists aboard. Enjoying the sun, the river and the harmless fun of pedaling these little boats around.

Paddle boat – Exploring the River Vie.

When we arrived in Apremont we had one main goal, which was to visit the beautiful Chateau d’Apremont. We had no knowledge of any other interesting sites to explore in the village itself or surroundings. But at the time we arrived at this picturesque village we immediately spotted the paddle boats at the banks of the river Vie. By that time we already made up our mind and decided to have a go at it after our visit of the castle. Finally we also took a look at the amazing St Martins Church and after that we hiked our way up to the beautiful river Vie.

We learned that the River Vie is the shortest of all the major rivers in the Vendée, being only about 62 kilometers long, but nevertheless it has had great importance in the past and continues to play a vital important role both commercially and as a natural resource. It is truly crucial in the local tourism industry and appeal particularly to domestic and Central European tourists who come for water sports, hiking and natural beauty rather than sightseeing larger cities in France. The beautiful and probably most famous river in the area of where we stayed (St Hilaire-de-Riez) is the river Vie and is best accessed from Apremont.
