In the middle of the Bas Bocage on the rocky cliff side of the River Vie is the picturesque village of Apremont. Towering over the village are the remains of the Chateau d'Apremont there is a superb panoramic view of the valley of the river Vie and the surrounding countryside. I always just love to stay for a while at such a nice view point. Just overlooking the surroundings and enjoy the scenery.
Thanks to the treasure hunt we learned a lot about the castle. Château d’Apremont castle was besieged in 1468 by Bretons who wanted to free the prisoner being held there. The Seige was lifted once the prisoners were released, but the surrounding country side as far as Saint Gille on the coast was devastated. The two surviving towers were part of a renaissance chateau built in the early 1500's and were built on the site of part of the medieval fortress. Today the castle is the property of the Municipal council and is a most beautiful example of Vendeen architecture.

The Chateau d'Apremont is the remains of a renaissance castle that was built in 1534, now owned by the local authority, it is open for visits during the season. We were gladly surprised by the very friendly entrance fee: adult €3.80 and a child (12-16) €2, but for 1 euro more you can buy a “combined” ticket which allows you to climb to the top of the town’s water tower where there is an enclosed observation platform and a map of the local area.
Another nice surprise was that there was a treasure hunt available for the kids. Cyrille, Iris and Sam received a paper with a map. By following this route they found 12 questions and those questions had to be answered of course. A very nice initiative and it made it even more special for the kids to visit this castle. We walked around, found all the questions and were able to answer them all correctly. A nice little present was our share. We won’t tell what it was … you have to try it yourself :)

For us this was just one of those “I want to visit this!” destination. We had a nice holiday at the beach at Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez and this is located about 20 kilometers far. We knew in advance that there are portions of remains of which are believed to date back to the 13th century. Apremont is located in the department of the Vendée, on a promontory overlooking the valley of the river Vie.
Arriving at the small and picturesque village of Apremont we immediately spotted The two extant towers that were built by Philippe Chabot de Brion in the first half of the 16th century. It’s truly a landmark in the landscape which you simply can’t miss. We were very glad that we arrived rather early, because we knew that the village gets very busy during the summer season and parking can be a problem. We were able to park our very easy and very close to the main entrance of the Château d’Apremont. Time to explore it!
