Le Grand Argentier: Fine Food (and a Place to Stay?)

Le Grand Argentier

Le Grand Argentier has long been considered by locals as one of the finest restaurants in Bourges and we agree. Long ago we dined there on two consecutive evenings. In those days, it also had nice bedrooms in this 15C house, to rent upstairs for the night, but I cannot find that this is still possible. The name of the establishment derives from the title given to Jacques Coeur when he was head of the King’s Mint. In looking in French Google last week for details about rooms at the Inn, there suddenly appreared a dozen new search listings, all newspaper articles under that title. It seems that the French newspapers use it as their equivalent of Secretary of the Treausry. The articles were about Timothy Geithner who just received that position in the U.S.

Favorite Dish: The fare at the restaurant is both local and accomplished and we enjoyed everything, (Nowadays they feature a tasting menu)

Le Jardin Gourmand: One of the best restaurants in town

Le Jardin Gourmand

The restaurant is located inside an older "bourgeois" home.
The menu for 30Euros is superb. There is a cheaper menu but this one is the best value for your money.
The presentation is beautiful. Each plate looks like a piece of artwork.
Check out the website for a list of dishes offered on this menu.

Favorite Dish: I loved the desserts but every single dish we tasted was superb. I highly recommend this restaurant.
It is also listed in the red Michelin guide.

Le Comptoir de Paris Restaurant-Bar in Bourges

Last Fall we got caught in a terrible rainstorm in Bourges, trapped inside the cathedral. As lunch time approached and started to pass, we decided that if we wanted lunch, we would have to brave the lessening rain and find a restaurant so we set off in a very heavy drizzle . . . that was a great improvement in the weather! We finally found Comptoir de Paris on Place Gordaine. It was a small bar and pretty empty but everyplace was empty in the storm.

We dripped into the restaurant and were cheerfully greeted by an eager waitress. There were four other customers, all local working men. Everyone was very friendly, especially the waitress who didn't think she'd get any other customers on such a miserable day. Several restaurants we passed had simply closed up shop for the day due to lack of people.

You definitely do not need a reservation. It is, effectively, a bar that serves good food.

Favorite Dish: We ordered the fifteen euro menu and got a starter plate of jambon sec with butter and cornichons, a main dish of confit de canard that was cooked to perfection with delicious well-seasoned green beans and followed by a gateau au chocolat that was mousse on a chocolate biscuit. The food was great.

The restroom was clean but Turkish, a footprint facility!

If you can deal with the footprint facility, the food is excellent and the atmosphere is probably quite friendly all the time since the fellows eating there were undoubtedly regulars. You will not find it on any touristic web sites and it is not a gourmet eating experience, just friendly with good food at a good price.

she was about to puke...not! lol!

This was about the only restaurant opened in Bourges, or at least the only one we saw opened?!?! We were starving so bad, we just had to come in and I'm glad we did cos we had a great time in here! It's easy to visualise how the locals reacted when they first saw us, two oriental lads and a black girl, stepping in. Everyone was practically staring at us until we sat down, it was hilarious. Service was good though they did some wrong orders for us becos they hardly spoke English. The food is good, though not super dupa but I guess it's the overall atmosphere that counts, I give me thumbs up for that!

The St Ambroix restaurant is in a beautiful renovated old chapel. The food is wonderful. It's expensive and the staff is a little 'stuffy' but the decor is superb.
Beautiful setting.

Favorite Dish: The cheese tray (dozens of all types of cheeses)
