Because Laurie was 5 months pregnant at the time, her dining choices were somewhat limited: no foie gras, no unpasteurized cheese, no mousse (egg whites), however she was able to enjoy the amuse bouche we were served as well as that divine starter soup. I remember it as being a Cream of Artichoke soup, Daniel remembers it as Cream of Asparagus; either way, it was divine, perfectly velvety, subtle in flavor, nice and warm on that cold February day. Laurie then had a frothy Cream of Mushroom soup, Daniel had this fabulous pan-seared foie gras with plums and a frothy mushroom concoction served in a Martini glass, while I had these beautiful toasted coconut encrusted langoustines (like huge shrimp)! I believe, all in all, we were served 6 courses: amuse bouche, soup, appetizer (entrée), main course, cheese platter and dessert. All for a mere 60 euro, including the bottle of Sancerre Rose that I suggested and Daniel and I shared. What was great is that these were people who loved food much as I do, who loved to try new things. I guess you could call this couple foodies (Daniel is writing a book about NYC restos) but yet they also loved simple foods, too, as long as there was a special aspect to the place. It ended up being a 3 1/2 hour lunch replete with witty and fun conversation. We shared each other's food (I love people who do that). We were the first ones in, the last to leave and we waddled out the door. It was a perfect meal!
Everything was fabulous from the sole meuniere to the Sancerre wine to the cheese plate but I'd have to say the food memory that lingers was the bite I had of Daniel's pan-seared foie gras, causing me to dream about the wonderful flavor and the divine texture. Cold foie gras leaves me, well, cold but pan-seared, ah!!!!, that is another story. It completely changes the taste and mouth-feel. Leave a Comment

On our way to Chartres Cathedral, some friends of mine from NYC & I stopped at this great macaronerie/chocolaterie they highly recommended called La Chocolaterie! We decided to pop in here for breakfast (hey, macarons & tea are breakfast food, right?). They have oodles of different types of macarons as well as a lovely tea room upstairs. Besides chocolate, they have a wide selection of macarons which L (the pregnant wife) and I stocked up on!
I can't remember exactly what I purchased but I recall it was a dozen macarons of varying flavors! Very good but not quite as good as Ladurée; these were a bit crustier but still very good! by shrimp56 There are other more French options near the cathedral -- but this seemed so unlikely that I had to share it! It is actually a very nice restaurant! Leave a Comment

We walked all over town looking for an open restaurant that wasn't already full, had something we liked and cost what we could afford. Couldn't find anything that met all criteria so gave up and returned to our hotel, the Hotel de la Poste, and checked their menu. Voila! It met all criteria and we sat down and had a wonderful dinner. Why didn't we think of that before?! Note: We returned in October of 2006 and discovered a lot of construction in the Post Office area. The restaurant was not open for lunch. I'm not sure if they are open in the evening during the construction or not. Check before planning a meal and I wouldn't stay at the hotel during construction because of the noise. They are no longer a Logis de France and their own web site is not working. These are not good signs.
Here's my journal entry from that day: "Our waitress was great and the food wonderful. Started with a vegetable pate garnished with halved cucumber slices and radish. Had coq au vin with carrots, potatoes and braised small onions. Dessert was titled Richelieu and was a cheesecake-like confection with vanilla custard sauce on one side and raspberry sauce on the other side. A thoroughly delightful dinner . . . great way to end the day! We originally chose this eatery because of location and a 10 yr. old. When we were hereover a decade ago, it was a brasserie. Its present owners are Italian and local tips on the Net state that it has the best pizza in town and an ambience to match. It is a pleasant place to sit out and if you are staying to see the Cathedral after dark, it should be worth a try. very nice brasserie off the tourist center, best prices, and warm welcome typical french brasserie 1930's style, traditional menus from 12,50 euros. Its one of my corners in the city for business or pleasure.
I go for my steak and fries with a good leffe beer anytime. However, the menu changes every day, and you can have a nice selection of traditional French dishes like boeuf bourguignon, lapin a la moutarde, etc etc. Leave a Comment Theme: FrenchPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: 4 rue du Maréchal de Tassigny - 28000 ChartresPhone: +33 (0)2 37 21 80 99Directions: from cathedral, take rue noel baley, to peripherique of the N10 continue on rue du grand faubourg, same st rue de la republique, left on rue jules ferry, cont same rue de la beauce, next st on your right is rue du marechal de tassigny .

Town square near the restaurant by Beausoleil The music was Caribbean, the cuisine pure French and the bread fabulous. When you see it from the outside, it looks like a Cuban or Caribbean restaurant. However, when you go inside, the menu is pretty French. This is from their web site: "Bar - Cocktails – Cuban restaurant. Latino atmosphere - salsa – cigar cellar – salsa lessons on Friday nights. At lunchtimes: light meals and grill." Excellent and friendly service but you do have to like meringue music.
My husband and daughter got salmon and I got the chicken. Both were excellent. Jacqui, the restaurant lapdog, kept us company, watching very carefully from under the table and occasionally coming over to see that we were all right. The meal was excellent including Ed’s dessert chocolate mousse that was just like fondant au chocolat and we wished we'd gotten the same thing although our desserts were good. Leave a Comment
