The garden is small but lovely. You leave the castle, walk along the side past the gift shop and into the garden. There are benches, a rose garden, a small pigeonniere, chickens of varying kinds and interesting sculptures all between the Bievre river and the chateau. The Bievre is a stream at this point and you could hop across it. In the distance is another chateau.
If you are going to Cheverny, this is a great stop on the way or on the way home. The two chateaus are completely different in style and attitude.

St. Eloi is right behind the chateau and is definitely worth a visit. It's in the heart of the tiny village and there are sidewalk cafes in the little square.
It's also a great place to wait for the chateau to open if it's raining outside. 8^)

The inside of the chateau was decorated for Hallowe'en since we were there in October. There were exhibits for and by various classes of children which were all interesting. Since it was a dark day and a dark castle, most of my photos were taken at a resolution too high to upload them on my very slow dial-up connection. I've attached two photos and someday when we have high speed, I'll add some more.
It's a great chateau and really deserves more attention. It would be especially good if you were traveling with children.

There is parking on the street or at the chateau. You enter a small gate and are in a gravel courtyard and this lovely house appears on your left. You purchase tickets to the chateau here and there is a small gift shop with a very friendly kitty.

The Chateau des Enfants or Children's Chateau simply means it has a specialty of education. There are programs for students and special exhibits of student work there. The educational aspects can be enlightening for adults who aren't familiar with the building of chateaus, like us.
We were so impressed with the outer aspect of the very formidable looking building that we stopped for a tour even though we were ostensibly headed somplace else. We were very glad we stopped as it was fascinating.
The chateau was originally built by the Dukes of nearby Blois and started around 1475. The small river Bievre runs through the grounds and there is an aviary and garden you may visit with benches along the river.
Open from September 12 to May 7: 10-12:30 and 14-17 and from May 8 to September 10: 9:30-12:30 and 14-18:30. Closed Tuesdays between October and March and on major holidays.
Cost is 5 euros for an adult, 3.50 for 18-25 and 17 and under are free. Check the web site for possible changes. It is included on the National Monuments Pass.
You can also rent the chateau in the evenings. Check the web site for information. Great place for a wedding.

We set off one morning for Cheverny and were driving peacefully along the D52 in the rural Loire countryside. We drove into Fougeres-sur-Bievre noting it was a very clean village until we were stopped...
