There are stairs and there are citrus trees in the moat so it has to be a microclimate. Great fun. It's a separate little world down there.

Or you can look down from above as we did. 8^)

While waiting for your tour, you can wander the chateau gardens and visit the lovely chapel. The present duke restored the chapel in 1986 and it is very interesting inside. When you look up at the ceiling, it looks like a ship. Then notice the beams. It appears that a gorgon or sea monster of some sort is holding the beams in its mouth.

The Stations of the Cross are all lovely framed black and white engravings.

There is lovely stained glass and it is very quiet and peaceful inside.

Click on the photo to see the interesting beams and windows. You also walk through a bower of roses to get to the chapel . . . if the roses are blooming.

It's only open from the first weekend in April until Sept. 30 so you have to time your visit if you travel out of season.

From the road it looks like a forbidding medieval fortress on a hill. Well, it is on a hill, but once inside that forbidding gate, it is a different century. There are still some nice old touches, like the marvelous well in the courtyard, but the chateau is relatively modern . . . relatively.

The family has lived here for over a thousand years and still lives here so you must take the tour but it is gracious and fun. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

Click on the photo for a view of the 17th century chateau from the 11th century garden and the lovely old well.

We were driving to Langeais and spotted a castle on a hill and decided to make a detour to explore. It was the Chateau de Luynes and was still open on Sept. 29 so we signed up for the tour. The tours are supposedly only in French but the only other tour members were Swedish so the guide switched to English so we could all understand her.

The tour was fun and ended just at lunch time so we asked the charming guide for a recommendation. She quickly recommended the Auberge de Bresne in nearby St. Etienne de Chigny. Then she called to make a reservation for us and drew us a map so we could find it.

We zipped to the restaurant and it was a warm, quiet, very pleasant place with no other tourists at all. We had a great lunch and continued our day tour.

Favorite Dish: We got tomato tart with salad to start, duck confit with caneton and roasted potatoes as an entrée. Ed got cream cheese in cream and I got a nice cheese plate and we had chocolate ligeoise for dessert.

It was all excellent and only 19.50 euros . . . a bargain for four excellent courses.
